Undemocratic Actions Of The Chamber Of Commerce

Posted on Tuesday, June 22 at 14:33 by Roy_Whyte
The ‘all candidate meeting’ was held on the 21st of June with a business-aimed theme. No invite was extended to the ‘fringe’ candidates because the Chamber believed, “your parties don’t have anything of substance to add on a business front.” “The organizer of the event, felt that Communists have nothing useful to say to the business community but that is far from the truth,” Holmes says. The Canadian Action Party is the only party that has a foundation of its platform set around trade and monetary reform as its main pillars. “What is more business oriented than that? To be denied equal access from a group that obviously knows nothing about CAP and our platform was both frustrating and outrageous”, says Whyte. After having dozens of supporters call in support for Whyte to the Chamber of Commerce they initially relented and offered a spot on the panel. Although, when the time came for the meeting, Whyte was told, “we only asked you here to tell you in person that you cannot take part.” No other explanation was given. Whyte came prepared for that and started handing out leaflets spelling out the actions of the SCC. More disturbing was the inaction of the other candidates. Knowing that Whyte and Holmes had been denied equal access, they said nothing on their behalf initially. Only after the questions were over and the ending candidate summations were taking place did Liberal candidate Dan Sheel speak up so that Holmes and Whyte could address the crowd. Holmes and Whyte both gave impassioned speeches, which brought the house to a standstill. Members of the community and even supporters of the other candidates rallied to the side of Holmes and Whyte and gave their appreciation for their stand on democracy and equal access. “In the end, I was probably given more exposure and gained more momentum by being denied than having been granted access as promised. People of the riding saw first hand how I will not take no for an answer and how I feel about our democracy and the right of both the candidate and the constituent to speak and hear all voices equally so they may form their own opinions,” Whyte says. Unfortunately these types of actions are taking place all across Canada against the small parties. Whether it is the media cold shoulder or being denied equal access at candidate meetings, our democracy is still under threat. -30- CONTACT: Kevin Peck (416) 535-0221 kpeck@canadianactionparty.ca

I don't know about anyone else but I'm finding the Chamber of Commerces to be as bad as the CCCE. The head of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce seems like a real militant corporate itchay bitchay. (Sorry I never did learn pig latin)

    Thanks for the kind words.

The Chamber tried the same thing only days earlier in another riding close by and it was all but shut down when first the Green candidate walked, then the NDP, then the Liberal. Only the Conservative stayed put.

In my riding though, no such move was made by the Greens and my mailbox is full of questions from Green supporters asking why their candidate did not extend us the same courtesy as the neighbour riding. It should not have only been the Greens though - they all should have said something, but only the Liberal did.

But like I was quoted in the press release - the local media most certainly now knows who I am and how I will operate. But also like the release states - this is happening across Canada. Tristan another CAPer that posts here was of course also denied equal access.

We must address these problems before the next election so they dont keep repeating. I am sure though that the Surrey Chamber of Commerce anyways will not make that same mistake in the future!

Not with you staring them down Roy.

Remember, the Chamber of Commerce is just that; about Commerce. Corporate power.

I would suggest you join as an individual, then as a member you could raise holy hell the next time they try that.

Real estate agents are members, so I don't see why other individuals with ties to business couldn't join. Those that are self-employed for sure !!

    Just a thought.

Great suggestions! In fact a number of close friends and associates are pulling their memberships because of this.

In the local paper the Chamber are denying that they relented and allowed me a space and later recanted. Oh well - business and truth have not always gone together.

On one door I knocked on today I got - "were you the guy who stood in front of the business meeting and raised holy hell?" Of course I said yes - to that he replied "thats what we need, people who stand up for what they believe in, not what they are told to believe in." He is still voting for Cadman by all accounts but hey - I made an impression none the less.
