"The underlying principle of the SPP is simply to encourage a common-sense approach, to deal in practical ways with practical issues that can help the economies of all three countries work better," said David Stewart-Patterson, executive vice-president of the chief executives' council.
Cliff Sosnow, of the Chamber of Commerce, said implementing SPP initiatives "can better position Canada in the U.S. market and enhance North American competitiveness generally vis-a-vis other established and emerging economic forces."
But MPs heard a cautionary message from the left-leaning Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
Its executive director, Bruce Campbell, described the SPP as "the umbrella for a vast array of security and economic initiatives under way to further integrate the North American market. It's a NAFTA-plus or deep integration initiative.

Somehow he seemed to have missed that the purpose of NAFTA was to do exactly that.
And Stewart-Patterson said Canadian business leaders on the competitiveness council are "very conscious of their responsibility as Canadians. They will very much be taking into account what they see as Canada's interests."
So there you have it. The prosperity of big business has Canadians well being, at heart. They say the meetings are not secretive and I suppose, for big business, it's not. It seems to be implied that the average Canadian should just relax while the big boys do business. There is no such thing as sovereignty in business. There is no such thing as "well being" for those not in business.

Expect little from life and get more from it.
The Canadian people have long been the losers and their wishes for their country have rarely been followed by those entrusted to express those wishes. Entrusted to the same Canadian Business elites and Politicians whose loyalties are not to Canada and Canadians but to themselves, their profits and foreign governments, mainly the U.S.A.? Also, US leaders have always had, and have expressed in their government houses, a clear interest in subordinating Canadian wealth and freedom to the needs and wants of the USA with total disregard to Canadian sovereignty.
Maybe its time Canadians started asking the U.S., are you with us or against us? Friend or Foe?

As long as Canada caters to them, we remain their friend. Ironically, it's Canadians that sell out. The US is just reaping the benefits. The SSP includes those Canadians that seem to think they can take from Canada and act as the middleman. The Americans aren't taking what isn't freely given. It's time Canadians objected to what is theirs being sold by those who claim to have our interests in their grasp. Canada belongs to ALL Canadians and not to those elite few, who think it is theirs to sell. I've come to the conclusion that few Canadians care anymore.

I tend to think that Canadians have been out of the loop for so long, that
generally we/they do not know what to do. How can you care when you really do
not know? Even if you hear info, who do you trust? When we do not have enough
info to make a decision, or take a stand where do the majority of Canadians look
for answers? We've been spun for so long, that the truth is hard to see or hear
and when we do we are suspicious of it, more than we are of the lies. I believe it
is called conditioning.

"aaaah and the whisper of thousands of tiny voices became a mighty deafening roar and they called it 'freedom'!"' Canadians Acting Humanely at home & everywhere
We democratically elect representatives to represent our beliefs, ideals, needs and wants along with a political Party that is advertised as representing those very values and instead we find out after they are elected they are following another path with a different objective.
Look at PM Steven Harper who after benign elected he admits the US Government (Bush) was supporting and backing him in his campaign to be elected PM. That the US Ambassador to Canada was beside him at his campaign headquarters the night of the elections.
That ex-PM Brian Mulroney, the most hated PM in Canadian history, was advising him. Brian Mulroney’s’ beliefs and values were to be the foundation of PM Harpers plane as to how he was going to be running Canada and the direction he would take Canada.
Is it no wonder that Canadians have come to the conclusion that Canadians are powerless to change anything in this Country and that their leaders are not loyal to Canada or Canadians but only to themselves?

What you say is true. Participation in world events have come down to the internet and TV. No media has always given it to us straight and nobody sees it all. The average Canadian however, don't seem interested. I have talked to so many people about the NAU (and variants) with no resulting concern. Some feel a common currency would be a good idea! I explain to them that the currency is irrelevant and explain the issues on hand. *They don't care. Most don't even want to hear about it. Most attempt to change the subject of conversation. The apathy is unreal.

I don't recall things were ever different. Much of Canadians history is behind closed doors. Today it is more evident because global news is instantaneous. We are more aware of the secrecy. The back room meetings and private deals, continue on but no one is in a position to end it. I wrote in a post earlier, that Canadians are apathetic. What's worse, is that people don't want to know, for the reasons you listed.
