U.S. Panel Defies NAFTA Ruling On Softwood!

Posted on Sunday, June 13 at 01:26 by whelan costen
"This decision is clearly without basis and seemingly unsubstantiated," said International Trade Minister Jim Peterson.

"Time and time again, both the NAFTA panel and the WTO have found no evidence of injury - or even threat of injury - to the American industry," he said.

The World Trade Organisation, too, has found no evidence that Canadian imports hurt the U.S. lumber industry.

British Columbia Forest Minister Mike De Jong said the Americans refused to admit they'd lost and intended to string out the issue.

But the U.S. commission suggested the NAFTA appeal panel had overstepped its authority by not giving U.S. officials more time to consider the case.

If our government had any guts they would impose an export tax on natural gas sent to the USA equal to the amount they are ripping us off for on softwood lumber and reimburse the lumber producers.

It's probably illegal under NAFTA but heck the Ameircans don't give a hoot about the rules when they don't suit them.

I can hear the Albertans scream all the way from Vancouver..

Let's start by getting the Conservative and Liberal parties out of the government. Then we can re-negotiate or terminate all of the "free" trade treaties.

This issue should be brought up on the debates tonight and tomorrow night, lets see how the Conlibs spin their way out of this one.

Why the hell do people always talk about "free" trade?

Why don't we try FAIR trade for once.

Ha! No wonder the US tells us to suck it. Our country has no credibility and no muscle to back up any sort of threats we make to the US.

If we told the US to 'suck it,' they'd just laugh and pat us on the head like the good little children we are.

I've been advocating an export tax on natural gas, and if neccessary, oil as well, for a long while now. Our MLA maintains "it can't be done". I think that's another way of saying" We're too scared to try it."

No export tax, instead we should have the federal government tack a tariff onto gas and oil . We could say that the provinces were overtly subsidizing the industry, (and they are), thus hurting US domestic producers and that we were trying to level out the playing field. Two can play their game.

More reason to Vote for Canadian Action Party. Nafta is a fraud and we are being sucked into the U.S. economy. Canada will dry up and blow away. But health Care and Tax cuts are more important right?

Anon, above, the US tells all countries to suck it. It`s just their usual attitude. But if you love them so much and like Hitler think that might is the only right, then MOVE THERE! You`d fit right in! But on the other hand, if Canada had strong leadership and told the US to 'stick it', we`d be successful, especially knowing that the whole world would be on our side. We`ve done it before, with Trudeau at the helm. Sad, though, that people like Mulroney, Martin, Chretien, and Harper lie and conceal their true intentions.

Exactly Dave, if we don't respect our own policies and country enough to stand up for it, why would anyone else? We must demand that our elected officials have a backbone and are not whipped into doing whatever the big slave driver tells us to...that is if we want to keep our Country!
