The Southeastern states, which include Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, consider Canada their biggest trading partner. Roughly $50 billion flow between the region and Canada each year.
The alliance wants to bolster existing trade in the forestry, energy, transport and pharmaceutical sectors, while facilitating export among second-tier firms without trade muscle.
This partnership, Charest said, is modeled after a similar friendship between the Southeast and Japan.
