Who¹s Afraid Of... Cat Stevens?

Posted on Monday, September 27 at 12:38 by Benyounès Saidi
Why would Cat Stevens be considered a threat to the national security of the United States, a country that he has visited some 20 times in the past year and which he describes as "a part of God¹s earth that I love and whose people have always been great friends to me"? Is it because he has really become a terrorist sympathizer, I wondered? I think not. Had the secret services in fact believed that, they would surely have shipped him off for extrajudicial treatment in Guantanamo (where the terrorist population is waning dangerously these days) or **rendered** him, say, to Syria, for third-party questioning and much more. Is it because he changed his name and his religion to Islam? Not likely, because the American leaders have nothing against Muslims. In fact, many figure amongst their best friends and allies, such as Prince Bandar, the Saudi Ambassador, who often comes to President Bush's ranch to pay a visit; or terror-fighting President Musharraf of Pakistan; or the members of the Bin Laden family (although this relationship, mind you, is only a rumor). Is it because he abandoned a brilliant and lucrative career worth millions? Now *this* a serious offense! In the land where the all-mighty buck really does talk, to turn one¹s back on it is an act of pure treason. Hell no, that can't be it either. After all, Martha Stewart abandoned her profitable business for a five-month retreat in a club with lots of bars, and there has been no noticeable effect on her bottom line. I spent a sleepless night mulling over all the possibilities and permutations in my tormented mind. And finally, upon waking the next morning, Eureka! The true reason for the strong-arm maneuver by the Homeland Security people suddenly dawned on me, and it all made perfect sense. Cat Stevens -- aka Yusuf Islam, aka Stephen Georgiou -- does indeed have ties with fearsome groups and individuals: those who seek through prayer and deed to build a world where peace and understanding prevail among all peoples. This is a dangerous man. Having once dreamed of a "Peace Train," he dropped fame and fortune to promote pacifism (God forbid!) and relieve suffering around the world. His secret cell, known as "Small Kindness," provides direct relief and support to the most vulnerable victims of war and conflict in places such as Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. His hidden agenda is to build a fraternal world to counterbalance today's "Wild World." In a word, this is a dangerous pacifist. So if everyone started to advocate wildly for peace as he does, who would be left to lobby for war for the conventional war, the covert war, the Petro Wars, Star Wars, the war on terror, the war for democracy, the preventive war, the perpetual war all of which require a lot of big expensive guns. And it goes without saying, someone has to manufacture and sell this basic material, and perhaps turn a little profit in passing. To this someone, Cat Stevens represents a danger indeed. When I first heard of this I played "Peace Train" as loud as possible and remembered a time when things were much more peaceful. But then I got to thinking and decided that it wasn't any more peaceful at all back then. The Americans were warring it up in Vietnam. Then, after watching "Gangs of New York" and "Dances With Wolves" I had this rather scary thought:
Was there ever (and I mean ever) a time when the Americans were NOT at war? Does anyone know? I would bet that they've been at it for most of their short history; from Plymouth Rock to Iraq, from way back then to even now. Peace.

Bienvenue cher ami Benyounès à ce forum! J'espère que tu y reviendras fréquemment.

For those of you that may have seen Cat Stevens once linked up by the media to the Fatwa against Salmon Rishdie, note following:

Searchlighting Islam
By Yusuf Islam
Mountain Of Light
October 18th, 2001

"Suddenly the media tried linking me to supporting the Iran's Fatwa on Salman Rushdie. The fact is that I never did support the Fatwa. Such is the irony."

How about this for a concept of Preemptive Peace? :-)

If he didn't support the fatwa, then he's not a good muslim. More than three quarters of all conflicts over the past decade have involved muslims killing each other or their neighbours, he's not following the faith if he still believes all that 'peace train' stuff.

How do you know, Anonymouse? You don't even have enough intestinal fortitude to sign your name to the fecal material you spew. Try standing erect rather than scurrying around like a corporat apologist.

If the USA can not trust Yusuf than there is no one to be trusted.

Terrorism has persisted because terrorism works. It makes people crazy.
Therefore a slap on the face of sanity.
I apologize for my crazy government.

For those who haven't caught it yet, here's
Yusaf's reply in the Guardian (UK):

I'd love to stay and chat, but, being American, I have a duty to go out and make some enemies somewhere.

Heil Dubya!

The Guardian story seems to depict a very peaceful man while most would have been quite upset over this. Cat Stevens sounded a bit like this very nice lad (Tom Hanks) in the Terminal having to deal with the "Security" bureaucrats that could not care less either. I suppose it could have been worse and they could have let him rot around for close to a year like in the real story of Tom Hanks.

Looking further into this I see Orwell 1984 all over again where the Ministry of "Security" is making things a whole lot less secure than if they were simply not there in the first place. This way they can get a bigger budget and more staff so that they can deal with more "Security" threats like Cat Stevens... I wonder how many violent lunatics will get triggered by such an intervention. I hope more will follow the remarkable example set by Cat Stevens or Yusef Islam.

This is the same "security" apparatus who went after Tommy Chong for making glass pipes last year. This is about the Culture War (we Americans LOVE our Wars!) more than anything else. Cat Stevens and Tommy Chong represent the anti-establishment movement of the '60's that Ashcroft et al are STILL SO afraid of. The Corporate Theocracy doesn't like the idea of a Peace Train ONE BIT...

It occurs to me that I have no Cat Stevens on CD. Guess I'll have to stop and buy some tomorrow. Maybe I'll pick up a Cheech and Chong disc or two as well. Perhaps if the Department of Enforcing Secret Enemies Lists, or whatever they may be called ;-), sees that they are encouraging people to support those they would persecute, they'll settle down and behave like human beings.

What's next? Are they going to bust Bob Dylan or dig up Kurt Cobain? Maybe they'll arrest Steve Earle and the Dixie Chicks for "UnAmerican Activities."

Oops, gotta go...a black Ford just pulled up outside the house.

Yusaf's rather tepid article in the Guardian is heated up by his comments in the LA Times yesterday:
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0928-04.htm

"Oh, I've been cryin' lately, thinkin' about the world as it is..."

More evidence that Midnight Has Broken (thank you, USA!)

Ah, this world is burning fast....as, it seems, it always has. I'm not so worried anymore. When the sirens sounded it was a signal to act quickly. Three - join your brothers and sisters and run home to the shelter beneath the stairs; two - gather your brothers and sisters and crouch beneath your assigned table; one - save yourself and crouch beneath your desk. We were taught to know the sounds of the sirens. I'm much older now. I'm not so worried anymore. There's only one thing we really need to get right and I'll tell you now as I thump my chest. Our hearts.
