Why Smart People Defend Bad Ideas

Posted on Thursday, May 26 at 13:40 by Jesse
I feel qualified to write this essay as I’m a recovering smart person myself and I’ve defended several very bad ideas. So if nothing else this essay serves as a kind of personal therapy session. However I fully suspect you’ll get more than just entertainment value ("Look, Scott is stupider than we thought!") out of what I have to say on this topic. has anyone else seen that documentary "stupidity"? they talk to a guy who has written a book on stupidity & the 4 fallacies people in a position of power fall commit from time to time:
    1. they surround themselves with sycophants (aka yes-men)
    2. fallacy of omnipotence (they think they're all-powerful)
    3. fallacy of omniscience (they think they're all-knowing)
    4. can't remember but i'm sure someone else who has seen the film will fill in this detail ;)

it's not so much that they're stupid, but given the position they're in & the people who surround them they will likely do things that will seem stupid from the point of view of an outsider.

Don't we all, at least once in awhile?

I've often wondered how many people I consider idiots think the same of me. Probably most.

    Oh well.

Good article J. I still can't believe I was in favour of the Iraq war, if for no other reason than to stand behind our traditional allies, despite the very weak evidence Colin Powell presented to the UN.
I fell into this trap too. Here are some others people generally fall into: http://www.datanation.com/fallacies/index.htm
