I feel qualified to write this essay as I’m a recovering smart person myself and I’ve defended several very bad ideas. So if nothing else this essay serves as a kind of personal therapy session. However I fully suspect you’ll get more than just entertainment value ("Look, Scott is stupider than we thought!") out of what I have to say on this topic.

1. they surround themselves with sycophants (aka yes-men)
2. fallacy of omnipotence (they think they're all-powerful)
3. fallacy of omniscience (they think they're all-knowing)
4. can't remember but i'm sure someone else who has seen the film will fill in this detail
it's not so much that they're stupid, but given the position they're in & the people who surround them they will likely do things that will seem stupid from the point of view of an outsider.
