......2- NATO work with the Pakistani government of President Pervez Musharraf to persuade the Taliban to abandon al-Qaeda.
......3- that the Pakistani government could work with the Pashtuns in northern Pakistan and southern Afghanistan to bring stability to Afghanistan.

Co-author Gordon Smith (ambassador to NATO 1985-1990, director of the Centre for Global Studies at the U-Victoria) said: "It's worth trying because we don't really have better options.”

“One has to explore the political solutions, difficult and unpleasant though they may be. I don't have a higher regard for the Taliban than anybody else, but I don't think there is any other alternative but to talk to them."

The authors also questions whether there is adequate co-ordination in Afghanistan between military activities and civilian relief in the zones of conflict in the South.

I feel like I just stepped into an alternate dimension.

So, the Centre for Global Studies (U.Vic) is OK if they say we should co-operate with people who sell young girls into sex slavery; but they are wrong when they say we should integrate our country into the North American Union?

"2) NATO work with the Pakistani government of President Pervez Musharraf to persuade the Taliban to abandon al-Qaeda."

What makes them think the Afghan Government isn't doing that already?

Funny thing that he would say that Afgh.needs half million troops to be "pacified", as usual saying goes.

I've been saying exactly this, on this blog, for about 2 years.

The present NATO and Canadian involvement is nothing more than a bad, cruel and disgusting joke. The generals know it, but they're lying their teeth out to demand more resources.

Good, it's settled then. Pack your bags and I'll pay for your one way ticket to hell, Mr. Smith.

If there is an "honest" reason the west has invaded the middle east, then let's hear it honestly. If its for womens rights then the middle east is just a very, very small target. Is it for democracy then the west had better stay home and start one there. There is a reason why the Taliban wants these foreigners out of their country. The west just has to get permission from them to rape & pillage Afghanistan as well. Once agreed, then the spoils can be discussed. Unfortunatly, once both sides are done, there may not be much of the "spoils" left. Perhaps once all is done, the remnants could be given to the neighbours for a disposal site. For several centuries the west has tried to overcome the area and mold it for their use. There is no point in stirring the septic tank anymore. There never was.
