EPA Fails To Detect Canadian Chemical Spills

Posted on Saturday, July 08 at 14:54 by Anonymous
The GAO report found that the EPA paperwork process results in multiple, duplicate reports of spills on the U.S. side of the waterways while failing to adequately track dumping on the Canadian side. Many spills go unreported. The EPA said that, from 1994 to 2004, 991 spills occurred from the United States and 157 spills originated from Ontario. But the GAO found that both numbers are not accurate. The admitted failure to protect the drinking water was no surprise to Doug Martz, chairman of the Macomb County Water Quality Board. In 2002, Martz sounded the alarm that more than 700 chemical spills had occurred from 1986 to 2000. http://www.macombdaily.com/stories/070806/loc_epa001.shtml
