As we've been discussing in the forums, is this statement racist?

"I want the fucking Indians out of the park,"

    Discuss.

Other than the use of the outdated 'Indians' to refer to native North Americans, the statement itself is not racist, no.

    Neither is the statement,

'We must find a Final Solution to the Jewish problem in Germany'.

The utterance of the Harris statement clearly identifies the person speaking it as a racist, however. Just as the Nazi statement (a summary of discussions between Hitler, Goering and Speer on setting up the death camps for disposal of jews) clearly indicates, by context and intent, that it is racist.

If a native North American refers to himself as "FBI" (F-ing Big Indian), is it racist? (a friend of mine, actually).

Harris was only referring to the natives 'in the park', not all of them.

I'm kind of reminded of Bill Cosby's rant on the N-word. If it's racist, why does my friend refer to himself as 'Indian', or should he stop it?

I'm just pointing out here the quickness that sometimes someone plays the 'race' card. I'm not saying Harris isn't a racist, just whether his statement was.

    What’s in a word?

"I want the fucking Indians out of the park,"

"I want the fucking Assholes out of the park,"

"I want the fucking Occupiers out of the park,"

"I want the fucking non paying guests out of the park,"

"I want the nice gentlemen of North American decent out of the park,"

Which would you have said in the circumstances and would that have made you racist or just biased (as are we all).

    I live for this stuff!
and as it happens i have at my side an First Nations friend
Former Air Force Pilot (Can,) Formed RCMP officer so I asked for his opinion at first he said Kinda and when press as to it is or it aint I got. it is
He don't like being called an Indian as he isn't from India

It the people in the park were in deed fucking ... But I digress

the adjective used shows the speaker to be at leasr unwise and further evidence would be required to show if he is racist

<blockquote> "I want the fucking Indians out of the park"</blockquote> Of course, Harris really meant: "I want this whole matter settled, as we have been screwing the First Nations Peoples for 200 years now, and it's time we paid our dues." <p>But, his underlings and the RCMP took his statement differently than what he meant. I mean, how else can his apparent immunity to prosecution be explained..........?</p><p>---<br>"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." <br />

"He don't like being called an Indian as he isn't from India"

I have a friend from India, and he likes to be called 'Indian'. ;)

To paraphrase a local Chief from around here, 'Some Indians don't like to be called such, because they are not from India. They'd rather be called 'Natives'. Some Natives find that offensive, and would rather be called 'First Nations'. Some find that offensive, because until recently they we were just a bunch of warring tribes, not a 'Nation'. And the Innuit just ignore all us southerners. You just can't win.'

Absolutely not. Your getting hung up on words. To me it is always the intent. I love it when native friends of mine refer to themselves as 'wagon burners'. It shows they have a sense of humour about the racism directed at them by other races, and take pride in some aspects of it.

It's all about context and intent. It's clear from Harris's heavy handed language and poor use of language he has no sympathies towards the native community and appears on surface to be a very bigoted racist person.

I'll take that badly. I have no need of your santimonious judgements on my normal postings. I speak my mind, wear my heart on my sleeve, and damn the torpedoes. If someone doesn't like it, tough. I have no time to sit here all day with my dictionary composing endless rambling diatribes that massage a point to loving death.

I'm in, read, think, post, I'm back to work.

I think most natives like to call each other 'Indian', but take great offense if a 'whitey' (again, racist) calles them that.

And I have no problem with that.

I think he was eventually canned. It was clear he shouldn't have taken the shot, but the inquiry indicated that failures at all levels up the chain of command from him put him in a situation that was overly stressful and dangerous, contributing to his poor choice.
