On Election Day, it might be fun to look back on the Best and Worst Prime Ministers in Canadian history. This is a reprint of the 1997 Maclean's article in which Canadian historians ranked former PM's.
Not a fan of J. L. Granatstein at all! I can't believe the historians had the gall to rank Mackenzie King ahead of MacDonald, and rank Laurier, the man who opposed confederation, number 3? Talk about "Treason of the intellectuals," Robin Matthews.
Only the historian from Manitoba adequately criticized free-trade, and Meech-Lake.
Trudeau was ranked average, along with Diefenbaker.....and they called Macdonald's National Policy "Moribund."
I would have ranked Mulroney and Chretien at the bottom! Kim Campbell was merely set up for the fall! Granatstein tries to portray himself as a proud Canadian historian, who is really nothing more than a Conservative-American apologist. He even defends Diefenbaker`s decision to scrap the Avro Arrow, when we all know that scrapping it was a HUGE mistake!
lol ...I'm really sure that Mulroney had nothing to do with the state of the PCs, and that it was all Kim Campbell. It's no surprise that King was picked as best by a bunch of academics, since King was one himself. Sure he was good, but I think he was just too boring to be "the greatest", which is why I'd have to pick MacDonald & then Trudeau. Borden is definitely the most underrated PM ever, while Laurier is the most overrated. I'd say Chretien & Mulroney will be the worst because of the things they stood by & allowed when in office. Chretien is more depressing though because he was always known as Trudeau's right-hand man wasn't he? & then he did all the stuff he did as PM.

which I agree with a lot more. I dont' have it here (work), but if I remember correctly, Mulroney has rated both - a bonehead and a bastard... and is at the bottom of the barrel. I heartily agree with that vs the insipid "average" rating that he is given in this article. If I have time, I'll post more after work.
I agree Perturbed, "Not a fan of J. L. Granatstein at all!!!" Somebody needs to rewrite anything this guy has said about history. Certainly not one of the more balanced viewpoints.
