CoC: Canada Bad Cop On FTAA

Posted on Tuesday, November 18 at 14:03 by sthompson
In response Canada, along with Chile and Mexico, declared that it would not accept anything less restrictive than the original FTAA proposal. Specifically, Canada has taken a hard-line position in favour of maintaining the proposed investment protection clause and including services in the agreement. “This position is baffling given the controversy surrounding protection of public services in Canada and the overwhelming opposition from developing countries,” says Jean-Yves Lefort, Trade Campaigner for the Council of Canadians. “Trade Minister Pettigrew has clearly learned nothing from Canada’s horrendous experiences within NAFTA and the WTO. He has no mandate to commit Canada to further dangerous trade deals, nor to force our mistakes on other nations.” “The three strongest members of the U.S.-allied Group of Thirteen have stepped forward to support the U.S.’s former trading position,” says Bill Moore-Kilgannon, Director of Campaigns and Communications for the Council of Canadians. “Clearly, our government has stopped negotiating on behalf of its citizens and has instead become a puppet in the U.S.’s sneaky strategy to further its free trade agenda.” “Paul Martin has declared that establishing stronger relations with the U.S. will be a primary goal of his government. For the sake of our public services, let’s hope that his desire for American approval won’t overshadow his duty to represent the Canadian people.” -30- For more information, contact: Laura Sewell, Media Officer – Cell in Miami: 613.795.8685; email: lsewell@canadians.org -- The Council of Canadians 502-151 Slater Street, Ottawa, ON K1P 5H3. ARGH! Pettigrew has got to be one of the most incompetent politicians who has ever worked in the government. This is just about as bad as John Crosbie (Mulroney\'s trade minister) not reading the 1988 FTA before signing it.

These guys just look and act stupid, but they know what they`re doing and signing. They know the consequences and implications. But they are mere puppets to big business and the so-called elite. Let`s face it, the minority that reside in Canada`s financial elite stand to make a HUGE killing by the sellout of Canada and it`s resources, and the best way to do this is to ensure there is a trade agreement which grants them uninhibited access to everything!!! The puppets are lining their pockets as they do the bidding of these so-called elite greed pigs!

So once again, without consulting the Canadian people we are being led to more agreements, which serve the corporate elites and the Bush regime\'s plan for world domination. Mr. Pettigrew is working for who?
