Although the panel's work is not complete, its recommendations are expected to be built around a four-point "victory strategy" developed by Pentagon officials advising the group. The strategy, along with other related proposals, is being circulated in draft form and has been discussed in separate closed sessions with Mr Baker and the vice-president Dick Cheney, an Iraq war hawk http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1948713,00.html

They are just way too late to do anything positive by staying in Iraq. I have to wonder how much of the aid/reconstruction monies went into building the embassy and other military compounds around Iraq that will likely have to be abandoned if they are in the end forced to leave by the Iraqis? What a pitiful humanitarian debacle.

They didn't waste much money on the US Embassy in Bagdad. They just took over one of Saddam's legendary Palaces. Rather apres pos, I think.

In the chaos of Iraq, one project is on target: a giant US embassy

Building work at the 104-acre complex, known locally as 'George W's palace', is supposed to be secret, but it is impossible to disguise the cranes dominating the Baghdad skyline

In a week when Washington revealed a startling list of missed deadlines and overspending on building projects, Congress was told that the bill for the embassy was $592 million (£312 million).
LOL. Only the yanks would spend half a billion dollars upgrading a palace that was a symbol of decadence to begin with.

    Dr. Caleb,

I believe Saddam's palace's are only a hostel while the new digs are being constructed for the invaders.

Like a spoiled child, Bush is going to do it his way one way or another. He has limited time and loosing his influence. In the next little while we'll be seeing Bush pushing harder to get as much out of Iraq as he possibly can. He visions himself as a world leader and wants to leave a legacy before his time is over. In his frame of mind, that's winning (being better then everyone). The worlds biggest embassy and a country full of prisons occupied by those who opposed his ideals.
