Communitarianism - Final Synthesis In Hegelian Dialectic

Posted on Monday, June 18 at 08:55 by Diogenes
Dr. Etzioni (who is often called a "guru" by other communitarians) explains where modern communitarianism comes from in the introduction to The Essential Communitarian Reader (1998). He admits the term communitarian originally meant: "a member of a community formed to put into practice communistic or socialistic theories," in the 19 th century. But in case that worries us too much, he assures us Webster's changed the definition in 1909 to mean: 'of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a community.' He tells us the editors of his little group called the Responsive Community, "recognized that communitarian ideas can be found throughout history, although the term itself was coined only in 1841 by Barmby, who founded the Universal Communitarian Association." Wikipedia has just a little more to say about Barmby. http://www.rense.com/general77/sele.htm [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on June 18, 2007]

Ahh...A kindred spirit with eyes to see with and a heart to understand and temper the wandering, dichotomous mind.<br />

    Re: YES and NO?

    "Hehehe ? or :-( ?" (hehe)

I was refering to those who would disagree about you, meaning the YES and NO's of the world (those still stuck in the total left/right control paradigm) not meant to offend, a feeble attempt at humour on my part.

Back to yes and no? Thanks and really? Hmmm...

Thanks again Dio for bringing something to my attention that I did not know about.

Communitarianism seems to describe precisely the society I see being constructed around us.

I don't necessarily have a problem with much of the concept of communitarianism, it's the inability for people to freely opt out that I find most disturbing, and it is clear that the concept is being taken to an extreme which resembles what one would expect to see in a police state.

The loss of individual liberty makes me feel as if I'm being held captive, which of course is the case.
