It's the new rage in BC now. The consumer is being charged to recycle. The onus is no longer on the provider to recycle the goods but on the consumer. Recently a law has been passed in the province that pass's a $5 recycling fee on all computers sold there. Tires, batteries and even paint include an enviroment tax. The fee is collected before recycling and consequently does little to ensure recycling.

"The fee is collected before recycling and consequently does little to ensure recycling."

That's the crux of the scam. If it is perceived that you get nothing for "recycling" then out to the trash it goes. Most people just throw out their old computers because it's less costly to go that route rather than take it to some chop shop and get nothing back in return. At least with bottles some of the tax is refunded when the bottle is returned, so there's a bit of incentive.

    Scam, scam, scam.

Oh, and the best scam of all is going to be the "carbon market".

Perhaps that to will change. The recycling fee won't be reimbursed and the cost to bottlers will dwindle. It's a scam alright! The Nanaimo dump, insists recycled goods go into particular bins and some bins cost more to use. If you got a mixed load, some items go off to the particular bins, the vehicle goes back over the scale and proceeds to the other bin(s)to be billed differently. No mixed loads can be dumped entirely.
