May 11: Census Test Day

Posted on Tuesday, May 11 at 14:10 by sthompson
With your help, we have sent a strong message to Stat Can and to Ottawa that Canadians want to keep the census Canadian, and reject giving contracts like this to private, and especially U.S. owned companies. We've also sent a strong message of opposition to dealing with military contractors that make weapons of mass destruction.

Without the many emails you have sent and the questionnaries you've boycotted, there is also no doubt this issue would not have received the press coverage it has. Even in cases where Vive was not mentioned, I can tell you we had a big part in keeping the spotlight on this issue. So that is another victory for us and for all Canadians.

We'll see what happens with the main contract for 2006, and go from there. Check in with us now and then and we'll give you the updates.

Thanks again to everyone. You have helped us make a difference.

What I don't understand is why are they still doing a test when the test was designed to implement LM's new census gathering machine?

    Jeez my ear hurts.

The test is there to make sure all the parts (not just the 'puters) are working together and kinks are iron'd out before 2006. Remember that there are a lot of people involved in the census and that their procedures need to be tested as well as the hardware/software. Talk to any geek that works on large systems...they will tell you the same.

Quick poll (show of hands actually):

    1) How many of you actually received a census form for the test?
    2) If you received a form for the test, how many of you didn't send it in/sent it in with bad information?

Another question for anyone: Statistics Canada has conducted these tests before(e.g. 2001) ...how many of original sent forms get returned on average? I hear that it is something like 50% and then they visit the remaining in order to collect the rest of the info. How are we going to tell if we had an impact on that 50% number? What about the real census? We don't actually want to boycott the real census, do we? That data helps the government decide important things. You wouldn't want an expressway built in your backyard because you and your neighbors intentionally didn't fill out the stupid forms! LOL Cheers!

Yes we do want to boycott the real census! For pete's sake that is when our critical data could become fodder for the U.S. gov; get real this is more than about having a supermarket in your backyard. According to an email from Mel Hurtig, we were right and LM is definitely still involved in the census; so we have much more work to do!

Sorry you said 'expressway' and you are right I don't want an expressway for my data heading straight south; so No LM involvement in our census nor any other foreign company!

Lockheed Martin Canada ISN'T a Canadian company?!? I'm new here and bit confused. Why do we have a problem with Canadians in Kanata, ON doing the census?

Suggest you do a search for census on vive to read many many post regarding this subject! LM is not a Canadian company, same as Canada Safeway, Tim Horton's etc. but LM is a military contracting co. and U.S. based, which ties our data to the Patriot Act...getting a picture now?

If not I encourage you to read the other posts, as there is far too much info on this already posted and so I won't repeat it here.
