The Alberta premier says this is a prime opportunity to revisit the issue of internal trade barriers, which he says cost the Canadian economy about $14 billion a year.
Stelmach says eliminating such barriers would increase productivity and competitiveness, build a bigger economy and help Canada compete with other trading nations.
University of Alberta economist Mike Percy says a recent trade agreement between Alberta and British Columbia should be used as a template because right now it's easier to trade with the United States than it is with other provinces.
