Dion Says Sovereignty Over North Can't Be Won With Military Strength

Posted on Tuesday, August 29 at 15:19 by sthompson
The former environment minister made the point to about 150 people at a fundraising dinner in Edmonton.

"The Conservative government simplistically thinks that by investing in weapons we'll able to impose our sovereignty on a territory that is as huge, almost, as Europe. You will never have this capacity," he said.

He said the way to make sovereignty known is to set up national parks and marine protection areas, and invite scientists from around the world to study the effects of climate change and to find solutions.

By doing so, "it will be recognized that we are taking care of the north, and many countries will then say it's better for Canada to be the sovereign power in the North."

He's right. According to international law, it will be won by the first country to use the NWP for commercial use.<br />

Your article says, rather clearly, only one thing, Dr C.

There is no such thing as International Law, it is generally just made up as we go along, usually by the more powerful nation, and can be ignored or changed at will.

The US, if still in existence as a super-power when the ice is free, will dictate to us what they think should be the law. Just like the softwood. Just like everything.

That's why we should take the middle approach - do as Dion suggests and as Harper suggests as well. We may have to use force or at least the threat of force to keep what is ours. While doing that we should take every other opportunity and angle to further enforce our rights.

This is about the only issue where the Conservatives have my support.

Here's a thought....how about actually doing some settlement "up there"? Ya know....become a 2-dimensinal country instead of the one-dimension we've become so used to....<br />

"He's right. According to international law, it will be won by the first country to use the NWP for commercial use."

First of all, what does the US know about law, international or otherwise?

Not much if current trends are any indication.

The ONLY law the US government understands comes from the barrel of a gun. Period. Full stop.

You want them to comply, you need to be able to hurt them badly.

Anything else is just playing to the cameras.

How I honestly wish the there was still a USSR to keep the rampaging hawks in the lower 48 in line.

I long for the day that the US imperium is broken and the people of the world have their nations to themselves again without any US busibodies sticking their corporate noses into matters they have no legitimate reason snooping in.

What they need in the US is another revoltion to restore the republic.

<blockquote>The ONLY law the US government understands comes from the barrel of a gun. </blockquote> How dare you use a Commie phrase to describe the greatest democracy the world had known!! The United States only starts wars in order to prevent war, and to make the world safe for democracy. <p>In a lesser manner, and in tribute to the ingenuity that describes the US government, Premier Gordon Campbell of British Columbia has given his consent to the building of freeways throughout the lower mainland, as a surefire way to lower auto pollution...........</p><p>---<br>"We can have a democracy or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few. Actually you'd be more correct if you said the greatest republic the world has ever known.

The US ceased being a democracy in any sense of the word decades ago.

Nice touch of humour though dude heh

I would have, except I doubt many American even know what a republic is nowadays, and would surely look askance at the word, hard sounding as it is. Doesn't have the "feel good" quality about it that "democracy" has, ya know? I mean, it's all about PR, n'est pas?

Unfortunately, your observation is probably truer than either of us realize.

This business just keeps getting more and more depressing as I learn more and more about it.
