Harper Raises Possibility Of Stepping Down

Posted on Tuesday, June 29 at 16:18 by KevinGagnon

When asked Tuesday whether he was thinking of resigning, Harper responded: "I'm always willing to serve, so I'm going to take a little time with my family... And obviously, I'm already talking to people across the country."

It's funny because the article raises questions as to just what went wrong. Ultimtately, Canadians don't want a far right Government, plain and simple. Harper, Harris, Klein, Lord et al. need to accept this fact. Their neo conservative vision for Canada will never materialize. Never!

I bet that if it was still the old PC (Progressive Conservative) party with David Orchard leading the party. That party would have done allot better. For one voters would have not been afraid of the party. And second Martin couldn't paint Orchard as scary. David Orchard would have came off as a very moderate left leaning tory. It could have been a minority PC.

There was a post or comment on here previously about Harper being a quitter and this just confirms it for me; if he can't have it his way,he isn't playing.

Another plus of the Harper loss is any chance of having Mulroney being appointed Governor General has now evaporated. If Candians were weary of the Harper before, having Mulroney and Mila move into rideau hall would surely have pissed off voters on an unprecendented scale.

The best thing that could happen for the Left is for Harper to stay on as leader of the Righteous Right. Canadians know what Harper is and what he is all about. Realisticlly, Harpers political aspirations are never likely to get past the Alberta border due to the results in this election. He is a western transplant from the east (Toronto) and Alberta is welcome to him.

Besides, Harper's ego is almost as big as the little used car salesman "Stock" Stockwell Day so I can't see Harper giving up party leader willingly. But if by chance Harper does resign as party leader we (Ontario) can always send you another piece of work......Tony Clement......and Alberta is welcome to him too. Seems Tony is out of work here.

    THAT never crossed my mind.

Thanks for scaring the hell out of me !!

On another note, I don't think harper is comfortable as leader, and he seems to dislike the press in his face, but that goes with the territory in politics.

Oh yes. The idea didn't exactly make front page (for obvious reasons I guess-mulroney in rideau hall would make the 'adscam' look like a blessing), but it was tossed around briefly.

It's possible that the PC wing of the New Conservatives is on the outs with Harper, and if they makes noises about splitting, as happened with the Reform/Alliance, the it's possible that Martin could scoop them up (he being a sort of red Tory himself fiscaly), and dispense with the NDP in order to govern with relative impunity.

Like one commentator said, the NDP planks are going to cost money, and all in places that Martin doesn't want to spend. If he could get around the NDP, he would be able to govern as David Anderson announced "as though we were a majority" (quote may not be quite right!)

So Harper may have to go, to keep the real Red Tories "in the fold", and away from Martin.

CTV spin - yes this story was carried around but it probably originates with David Herle the CTV bigwig and Liberal Party campaign manager. CTV wasn't too tough on Paul Martin during the campaign because they knew the boss is coming back and of course they want to stay on his good side in order to avoid the basement office. The Liberals could also count on the CBC for total spin support and they did the job quite well - notice that they were the only outlet that considered loud mouth American commentary on the Canadian election 'breaking news', it's amusing when our socialized 'Canadian' national broadcaster swoons over Americans, talk about parochial. Liberals use taxes to buy all sorts of media and advertising that support their party, even if they have to steal the money, it's a wonder that any other party gets votes considering the sheer number of groups they have in their pocket.

And there's always the question of Mike "Fraser Cabana Boy" Harris as well...remember the rumours of having him take over the reins?

The Fraser Institute can never have enough of their peons out there in places of power, after all. And Mikey is still their golden boy.

An intersting quote from Harper yesterday was when he said the world was unfolding a bit more slowly than anticipated. Just wondering what kind of world he is talking about. His neocon, integrated North America world maybe?

Don't worry about Harper. I hear he has a job lined up for him as a third world dictator. Apparently he has already scheduled an interview with Satan.
