Martin To Allow More Foreign Ownership Of Media--Will Lead To More Media Concent

If that occurs, as expected, in the next 12 months, those with ringside seats predict Canadian cable and phone giants will begin selling out or forming alliances with foreign media companies, especially American partners.

Douglas Frith, president of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Assn. (CMPDA), which represents the interests of Hollywood studios in Canada, predicts that newly installed Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin will respond to growing calls for the dismantling of foreign ownership limits by loosening them instead.

"At the end of the day, he (Paul Martin) is a businessman. He's getting pressure from industry players because they need capital infusions" from international financial markets, Frith says.
