Gordon Laxer & Marc Hasbani On CBC Radio

Posted on Tuesday, August 07 at 08:50 by N Say
So perhaps not surprisingly, as in the 1970s, there are renewed calls for Canada to nationalize its oil and gas industry. The Current headed to the streets of Calgary and Montreal to hear what some people think about the idea of nationalizing the pumps.

So if the price at the pump is the problem is nationalizing Canada's oil and gas industry the solution? Well, that was the finding of a recent study by Leo-Paul Lauzon and Marc Hasbani of the University of Montreal.

Marc Hasbani is a PhD candidate in Social economy at the University of Montreal. He joined us from Montreal, Quebec.

Nationalize Oil

Jean Paul Getty, the famous American Industrialist and founder of Getty Oil, who compared the hunting of oil to the hunting of a wild animal. Whoever manages to capture oil, Getty once said… owns it!

In Canada, that saying still holds true. You don't own the oil unless you happen to own shares in Exxon Mobil, Suncor, ConocoPhillips, Petro Canada or one of the big, private corporations controlling Canada's oil supply.

But Gordon Laxer would like to see that changed. He is a professor of political economy at the University of Alberta, Director of the Parkland Institute - and the author of Open for Business:The Roots of Foreign Ownership in Canada. He was in Edmonton this morning.

Link [FYI Gordon Laxer is the same prof who was making his presentation to that House of Commons Committee when the Conservative chair stormed out. I haven't heard of those guys from Quebec though; they sound like interesting guys. - NSay] [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on August 7, 2007]

Gee, how surprising. A pair of leftists recommend nationalizing something. I never saw that one coming...lol.

It took me a few tries to post my comment above. I wonder why the spam detector is configured to block the word spelled S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-T (which I changed to "leftist").

Something is messed up with the spam filter, eh?

I wonder how all the generic male enhancement stuff translates to a political ideology . . .

It's odd that a word that legitimately describes one of the ideological underpinnings of the Canadian nationalist movement is considered "spam". I guess the spam filter must have a special setting for "double plus ungood".

But hey, when in Spam, do as the spammers do.

As much as I despise The Current, yes I did. Hasbani wants to nationalize to reduce the price of gas. Laxer wants to nationalize but keep the prices high (either because he considers oil use evil or he wants to tax the hell out of it to fund even more statist do-gooderism).

And of course, we also got to listen to a lot of sneering little digs at Albertans by the host.

I didn't hear any sneering digs at the Albertans. I heard sneering digs from that former Albetra politician & a couple of industry people though.

That's funny! Occam's Razor wins again. Does that mean the NDP and CAP suffer from "electile dysfunction"?

Well Diogenes, at least *you'll* never have to worry about a spam filter.
