FTAA Marches--CoC Press Release

Posted on Thursday, November 20 at 14:54 by sthompson
The Council of Canadians will be protesting the hard-line position the Canadian government has taken in favour of maintaining investment and services clauses in the proposed agreement. Canadian trade negotiators are continuing to push for an aggressive FTAA deal despite the 'FTAA Lite' proposal coming from the United States and Brazil. "At the World Trade Organization meeting in Cancun, Canada's Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew was aggressively pushing for investment and services clauses against the wishes of many poor countries. The result was that the negotiations collapsed. Now, less than 10 weeks later, Mr. Pettigrew is up to his same old tricks," says Jean-Yves Lefort, Trade Campaigner for The Council of Canadians. "In 3 weeks Paul Martin will be Canada's new Prime Minister. Canadians have been telling the Chrétien government that it has 'no mandate' to pursue these corporate-driven free trade agreements. Mr. Martin must make it clear now that he will only pursue fair trade agreements," says Bill Moore-Kilgannon, Director of Campaigns and Communications for The Council of Canadians. More than ten thousand people have already gathered for the march that will be starting around 2:00 pm EST. Thousands of police officers have been deployed. 185 buses full of protesters have reportedly been detained en route to the demonstration. Non-violent direct action activities are scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm EST. - 30 - For more information, contact: Laura Sewell, Media Officer - Cell in Miami: 613.795.8685; e-mail: lsewell@canadians.org Also available for comment: Bill Moore-Kilgannon, Director of Campaigns and Communications, Edmonton, AB Sarah Erhardt, Water Campaigner, Moncton, NB Jean-Yves Lefort, Trade Campaigner, Moncton, NB Anil Naidoo, Blue Planet Project, Edmonton, AB Fred Wilson, Board Member, Ottawa, ON Leo Broderick, Board Member, Charlottetown, PEI Naomi Klein, Toronto, ON Art Manuel, Vancouver, BC -- The Council of Canadians 502-151 Slater Street, Ottawa, ON K1P 5H3. What was Bush saying over in London, about democracy and the right to protest? Isn\'t it great that the Iraqi\'s will soon have this wonderful freedom too! Oh to the hipocracy of diplomacy and media coverage, how great it is!

The right to protest is legitimate in most countries. The right to commit violent acts is not legitimate, and gives us all a black eye.

Frustration is the key, and if we can\'t be heard at a protest march, then things will escalate.

Marches and speeches are great, but we don\'t always get a response from the target of the protest, which is the reason for the protest in the first place.

These so-called leaders and corporations started the violence by assaulting social and economic justice! It seems they want most people living like people who live in the inner cities of the big American cities! That`s what I`ve been trying to say all along! The more you widen the gap between rich and poor, and the more you eliminate the middle class, then you end up with more murder, violence, drugs, guns, and poor quality education and of course, no health care! But in the midst of all this, I still see rich people voting for those corporate fascists who will give them the tax cut! No sir, $20,000,000 isn`t enough for me, I want $50,000,000! This extravagance is ALWAYS at the expense of the poor and what`s left of the middle class! My mind goes back to Michael Moore`s film, ROGER AND ME.

Take a look at this report on Mexico\'s unhappiness with NAFTA, then tell me the FTAA is a good thing.

They would like to see some major changes to it.

I would just like to scrap it. period !!
