Comment Spam Eliminated?

Posted on Saturday, May 29 at 15:08 by Jesse
I've just finished changing the vive code so that anonymous users can't post comments with more than 2 links. I think this is a reasonable limit, and shouldn't interfere with many comments at all. Logged in users are allowed to post as many links as they want in their comments.

If you're interested, these comment spammers are trying to improve their ranking in google by dropping thousands of links to their shady websites all over the net. By disallowing anonymous comments with many links, we make that strategy impossible. I hope that other sites implement this as well.

I'm glad you were able to keep the anonymous posting feature. Thanks for your work on updating vive.

Thanks for the feedback, it's good to know the effort is appreciated. :)

The trick is adding restrictions that prevent abuse but don't prevent legitimate use, something that the various anti-terrorist measures around the world would do well to keep in mind. (I am not calling spammers terrorists, though it's tempting).
