Liberals Want Louise Arbour, U.N. High Commissioner For Human Rights, To Lead Pa

Yesterday, Arbour's commission released a report strongly condemning the "arbitrary detention" in Guantanamo's prison of about 500 suspected terrorists. The way America captured and continues to keep prisoners violates international law, declares the report, with the U.S. government operating "as judge, prosecutor and defence counsel." Arbour said she saw little alternative to shutting down the prison, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan backed her view, urging the camp be closed "as soon as possible." The commission's 54-page report was prepared by five human rights experts investigating for 18 months. The authors conclude that Guantanamo's detainees should either be released or given a trial outside of the U.S. military tribunal system. http://thetyee.ca/News/2006/02/17/LibsLeader/ [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on February 19, 2006]

<blockquote>Former Canadian Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour, head of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, is seen to carry the iron-clad credibility the Liberals need in a post-Gomery world. Sources say a "Draft Arbour" campaign is in the exploratory stage and gaining momentum.</blockquote> is that all that matters? that she "is seen" to carry the ironclad credibility, etc etc, implying that she doesn't really, but she gives that appearance?<p>---<br>"George Bush has declared the war on terrorism to be the cause of his generation. Have read some of her bio, seems like a pretty good individual.I am sure she has some ghosts in the past, but then who doesn't?
Louise will get the job if she decides to run.The Liberals always alternate between a french/english leader.
She will get Quebec for the libs, she is french.Which means the liberals get a minority government next round. If she gets votes in Ontario and the west the libs get a majority.
Of course all this depends on....IF she decides to run.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding why she would want to run. Forget about the problems within the Liberal Party, Arbour does not have much of a record of wanting to be involved in partisan politics.
