Two days ago, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman formally rejected a plan submitted by the EU members that would have barred Iran from "enrichment-related activities". Foreign Minister Hamid Reza Asefi said, "The Europeans' submitted proposals regarding the nuclear case are not acceptable for Iran."
Asefi did the right thing; the offer was conspicuously hypocritical. The United States doesn't allow any intrusive inspections on its nuclear weapons sites even though it is the only nation that has ever used nukes in battle and even though it is developing a whole new regime of tactical "bunker-buster" bombs for destroying heavily-fortified weapons sites buried beneath the ground.
The US is also the only nation that claims the right to use nukes in a "first-strike" capacity if it feels that its national security interests are at stake.

The fact that Iran wants nuclear weapons and the missile technology to carry them is obvious, Iranians continually say as much.
Unfortunately, they also say that as soon as these weapons are ready they will incinerate Israel.
Islamic fundamentalists are such racist fascists that they cannot stand the fact that there is even a tiny sliver of land left in the middle east where Jews are relatively safe, they want the ethnic/religious cleansing to be complete. And they certainly despise the fact that it is also the only country in the region where people, including muslims, are allowed to express their political opinions through the ballot box.
'World War 3' is still unlikely however because these fascist regimes, like Iran, are still too backwards and incompetent to pose a sustained credible threat. After they used a couple of nukes their existence would be terminated permanently - Islamic pride at having 'the bomb' could ultimately be the worst thing that ever happened to Islam.
God bless the USA and have mercy on the rest of the world
peace
That's a pretty serious allegation. What is your source? (I hope it wasn't Fox news; we all know they are nothing but a bunch of fascists who got their credentials from the Geobbels School of Journalism.) Why should we believe it? Because a neocon fascist liar said it?
>>Islamic fundamentalists are such racist fascists that they cannot stand the fact that there is even a tiny sliver of land left in the middle east where Jews are relatively safe<<
Many Jewish families lived in islamic lands for centuries. They weren't persecuted. The hardcore Zionists are every bit as racist and fascistic as any Islamic fundamentalist culture, if not more so. Look how they treat the Palestinians they ousted from land that they occupied for centuries. Considering that Israel is the only country in the middle East with nuclear weapons, I dare say they are fairly "safe". Israel doesn't want Iran to have nukes because that would create a balance of power that might force them to "behave themselves". Right now, they are enjoying their military supremacy and don't want to give that up. If there is any country destabilizing the middle east, it is Israel. As far as I am concerned, it should never have been granted to the Zionists.
>>'World War 3' is still unlikely however because these fascist regimes, like Iran, are still too backwards and incompetent to pose a sustained credible threat.<<
Only an idiot would oversimplify the geopolitical situation like that. Are you aware that China gets oil from Iran and is hoping to get more? A war in Iran would strangle the Chinese economy and slow its growth. I really don't think they'd sit idly by and watch, as they did in Iraq. Russia borders Iran, and cold war thaw notwithstanding, I dare say they wouldn't be too happy about the US going to war with what has traditionally been a friendly neighbor. Going to war with Iran would simply be stupid. Using nukes there would be monumentally so, and would probably be sufficient to rouse the nuclear ire of both Russia and China. It could easily escalate to a global thermonuclear holocaust. Oh...forgive me...Iranians are "still too backwards and incompetent to pose a sustained credible threat".
Do yourself a favour and quit getting your international geopolitical scenarios out of comic books.
Israel would do itself a great favour by concentrating on the same thing, instead of harassing the Palestinians (who happen to be sitting on major sources of water in the West Bank).

Iran only wants to make electricity? - you may be kidding yourself by trying to believe that assertion, but grown-ups realize that Iran sits on a huge amount of oil - they certainly have no need to develop nuclear energy, that money would be much better used to develop the rest of their backwards economy.
And guess what - if the Palestinians would stop strapping bombs to their children and sending them into Israel, the Israeli's wouldn't be forced to try and stop that madness themselves. Israel should be highly praised for its restraint in dealing with its Arab neighbours, not many peoples would accept the number of hostile acts it has to deal with without striking out.
All Zionists may be Jews but few jews are actually Zionists.

You know that Iran has nuclear reactors that do produce energy right now.. right? Which is all well and good by everybody's standards - nobody is saying that Iran should not have nuclear power plants (OK, I'm sure there are some, but we'll leave Cheney out of this for now). The issue was that Iran had originally allowed the IAEA to come in and seal up some pieces of equipment that are used to enrich uranium so that it can be used for weapons grade material. Iran notified the IAEA a few months ago that they wanted to remove the cameras and seals, and the US ane EU freaked out. Iran said they wanted the enriched uranium for research. That would be the first phase, the production of UF-6 gas which is used for fuel in reactors, which it looks like they have begun. Before they suspended their processing (voluntarily) back last year, they had processed some 37 tons of "yellow cake" which is raw uranium into UF-4, the precursor to UF-6. The second phase of the enrichment process makes weapons material (UF-6 is processed to become weapons grade, UF-6 itself is used in some reactor types). Thus began the EU soft diplomacy to provide Iran with an alternative fuel source (nuclear fuel from Europe that is produced such that weapons grade enrichment is not feasible).

Iran rejected this proposal, and since the seals on the Iranian equipment was put there voluntarily, the IAEA had to pull them when asked to do so (see article below).

http://fullcoverage.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050811/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iran_nuclear

Iran's ambitions may be benign... after all, they are putting cameras up for "surveillance" of their production facilities and to ensure third parties that none of their uranium ends up somewhere else. However, their rhetoric is not matching their actions. Mohammad Khatami has repeatedly said that the invasion of Iraq and non-invasion of North Korea builds a strong case for nuclear detterence. Several clerics have called for Iran to burn Israel and to teach the American's a lesson (I couldn't find any article that elaborated on that - so it might just be some blowhard who knows anti-American sermons increase attendance at his mosque).

But why does the Iranain president make pro-bomb statements if they have no intent to start this program up? It could be political posturing for the internal audience. It could be to thumb their noses at the Yanks. It could be to build support inside the country to build a nuke.

Why remove the seals, if Europe will provide Iran with reactor material? It could be to expand research and technical abilities for Iranians. It could be to again thumb their noses at the US. Or it could be because that is the only way to make weapons grade material.

Why decline inert fuel rods from the EU? Again, it could be to increase technical ability and self reliance within Iran. Or it could be because the intent is to build a bomb.

Now, none of this is the most substantial evidence in the world. But it is more than a shred of evidence. It does more than just make your eyebrows raise in suspicion. Iran is covering up something. Maybe it is their own lack of expertise in making a weapon. They might be hiding the fact that they worry more about how to secure any device they made so that it would not be launched prematurely by some unit commader with a hate on for Israel, the US or Russia the next time they bomb Grozny. They may not have any intention to make one. But all the indications are there.

The world is right to be worried. Each new player makes the world that much less secure. It would be nice if they all pulled a South Africa, but it is unlikely that will occur in our lifetime. The best we can hope for is the status quo.
