Bev Delong, Chairperson, Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (403) 282-8260 ============================================================================================================= The Right Honourable Paul Martin Prime Minister's Office House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6 Email: pm@pm.gc.ca Dear Sir: I write as a citizen to express my deep concern about the threat posed by the current world arsenal of 29,000 nuclear weapons. Some 4000 of those weapons are maintained "on high alert" by the U.S. and Russia, ready to be launched in minutes upon a computer warning of an incoming missile with a high risk of error. This places all humanity in grave danger. The Government of Canada must direct the Canadian Delegation to take a leadership role in working for a positive outcome to the NPT Review Conference. I urge the Government to publicly call for: • Urgent steps for nuclear weapons to be taken off high alert (including an immediate end to policies of launch-on-warning) • A start on negotiations on nuclear disarmament and on controls of materials used to build these weapons • No backtracking on the progress made at the Review Conferences in 1995 and 2000. I encourage all efforts possible toward the creation of a nuclear weapon-free world. Sincerely yours,

    we won on missile defence??!!

    Yeah right!!
Paul Martin said no to that but its just a publicity stunt. He is already commited to NORTHCOM intergration of our Millitary, Police, and Borders into this program, unifying us with the USA and Mexico. They will also be pushing for one currency for North America "in order to compete with the EU" Once this occurs, our millitary will basically be under the control of the USA, so it won't matter if you and i object to the missile defence sheild. Within NORAD we are already an intergral part of it anyways.

So please lets not talk about a missile sheild victory, its just a bunch of bull...

If we are to start eliminating nukes,we have to start with the US as they are the country to use them, and continues to use them.

Agreed anon,we won squat on missle defense.Just a ruse for the politicians to play with the public.
What I still want to know is who are we defending ourselves from? Are the powers that be going to create violence to justify the police powers?

So are you for nukes or against them? It's a simple question. A journey of one thousand miles begins with one small step. "inch by inch, row by row, we're going to make this garden grow, we're gonna mulch it deep and low, turn it into fertile ground"...Pete Seger (I think, or Arlo Guthrie)

If you mean use them in the sense of having them available for deterrence, then yes, the USA, the UK, France, Russia, China, Israel and a number of other countries use them. The last use by the USA against real targets was in Japan in 1945. The last use by anyone of nuclear weapons against real targets occurred in the 1969 border clashes along the Ussuri River when the Soviets detonated 6-10 tactical nuclear weapons against the Chinese.

Spud, if you look back through history you will find that is indeed often the case. Those who want to see us in a Police state will engineer the threat, so that we will see it as nescassary....

Umm ... nice sentiment but really a tad naive. If the last couple of years has taught us anything it is that having nuclear weopons is the the only defense against US military power.

I think the 'smart' thing to do would be to build or buy 4 subs that are capable of carrying sea-launched nukes. The french might help lol.

This would solve two pressing problems.

First, Canada could claim that it is finally doing something concrete to contribute to continental defence by adding to the continent's nuclear deterent.

Secondly, it would ensure our national defense by ensuring a deterent to US imperial ambitions. Not that the US would ever want us (or our oil or water).

Frankly, in a perfect world, i`d say get rid of the nukes. But in this world, in the future, Canada is going to need this deterrent, if we`re going to fight off the gluttonous US and Chinese appetite for resources! Anything less, unfortunately, makes us easy pickings!

The US continues to use Depleted Uranium shells in Iraq.
    They are radio active.
I believ they count as nuclear weapons, correct me if I am wrong.

You are incorrect. Depleted Uranium weapons do not rely on the process of 'fission' to operate, therefore they aren't 'nuclear weapons'. They are highly toxic though . .. not to mention quite deadly as far as high velocity projectiles . ..

They are radioactive. They do cause cancer and birth defects.
