MP Bill Blaikie Continues To Question L-M Census Contract

Posted on Friday, October 24 at 15:19 by sthompson
I want to the ask the Deputy Prime Minister if he has had a chance to look at this Lockheed-Martin file and whether he can tell the House today that this contract will be rescinded and the census will be done in Canada, by Canadians, where it belongs? Hon. Andy Mitchell (Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario), Lib.): Mr. Speaker, the reality is that this is a Canadian subsidiary that will be conducting the census. The information will be maintained in Canada. It will be conducted in Canada. It will be a Canadian enterprise providing a valuable service to Canadians, which we have always done in terms of the census.

Reading this exchange ( as well as all the others between political opponents in the House) I cannot help but be saddened by the lack of disclosure our Government provides to the people of Canada. It is disheartening to see how much posturing takes place in the House and how much contempt there is for the people who have placed their trust in those elected. The realsity seems to be that the Government has no idea what really goes on in its companies and branches, and that soemwhere a Deputy Minister is deciding what does and does not get passed along. Swift would be proud.
