"The new rule may impact many B.C. vacationers," explains Michael
Middelaer, BCAA's Director of Travel Services, noting that an estimated 41 per
cent of Canadians and 34 per cent of Americans hold a valid passport. "The U.S
and Mexico are among the biggest international destinations for B.C.
travellers and the first months of the year are considered high season for
Caribbean and Mexico travel.
"We are reminding customers that it takes time to locate or obtain the
necessary documentation to apply for a passport," adds Middelaer. "Waiting
until the last minute could create unnecessary stress and even trip delays or
cancellations."
The U.S. plans to implement similar requirements at land borders and
seaports on June 1, 2009 (or earlier, depending on when a secure document can
be developed).
