Will our cable guys strike gold?

This is some form of insanity, I hope Paul Martin loses the next election big time, but I don't think that will happen.

Maybe he'll get hit by that bus Sheila Copps was talking about last year.

Note: Will our cable guys str...

It was a slight exaggeration to call Sheila Copps an \"Ardent Canadian Nationalist,\" (see Copps\' quotes in Vanishing Country) but other than that, I liked Linda McQuaig\'s article.

What I don\'t quite understand is why both countries kowtow to the cable companies. It is essentially a monopoly. Seperate companies that have divided up territory. Even the phone companies are open to direct competition. Direct competiton would allow for fair market value for the product.
As for selling out to the American cable companies, I think that the Americans would soon find out that in Canada, there is a demand for shows other than the sterile, homogenous brand of entertainment that American cable produces.I live in Washington and even here CBC gets turned to by Americans when they need relief from the constant bombardment inane programming.

Since I am on satellite, I don\'t know much about cable, except that I hear that in this area of central Ontario, it isn\'t much good and you can\'t get high-speed internet through it.

My laugh was what if the Americans buy out our television networks, what then ? I can\'t stand some of the news you get on American channels, are we to expect the news on these new networks would give us good coverage of Canadian news ?

    I doubt it.

We can\'t even get our own media to inform us. That would be a great mistake.

The media is the one way that government can get a message to masses of people cheap! They can influence us through the news, ads etc. Why would Canada want to give any of this control to another country, I don\'t care which country, any country other than Canada, shouldn\'t be controlling any aspect of our media - now if we could get them to stop influencing the actual content of the news, that would be terrific?!

Sell the CBC first and quickly! A Billion dollar sinkhole we don\'t need. As for private property, whatever that property may be, the gov\'t should have no say in the sale. Gov\'t control of your property means that it\'s not yours, what if they told you that you could not sell your house to immigrants? unfair.
