The scientists also strongly criticized the company's public statements on
global warming, which they described as "inaccurate and misleading."
The Royal Society cited its own survey, which found that ExxonMobil last
year distributed $2.9 million to 39 groups that the Society saysmisrepresent the findings of climatologists.
This is the first time the Royal Society has written to a company to
challenge its activities. The move reflects mounting concern about the
many lobby groups financed by Exxon and other oil companies that are trying to
deny or undermine the overwhelming scientific evidence that greenhouse gas
emissions are linked to global warming.
