Federal Liberals Need Decisive Leader

And unlike many Liberals, and most Canadians, Mr. Harper has no problem with George W. Bush and the basic thrust of his administration, both domestically and internationally. This makes it easier for him to repair the rift in our relations with America. The dilemma for Mr. Harper, and all who wish to lead this country, is the dichotomy of Canadians when it comes to the United States. We want to be friends, but we want to define the relationship. We want the kind of friendship that allows us to be critical and, at times, unsupportive of issues important to America. But at the same time, we want their support and understanding for issues important to us. How one proposes to square this circle is an important consideration for anyone aspiring to lead this country. It comes down to simply convincing Canadians that you, as leader, will have the very best interests of the country at heart, and that you will know what to do when facing tough decisions posed by the Americans. http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/index.cfm?sid=3028&sc=5
