Defending Lockheed

Posted on Thursday, May 20 at 15:40 by sthompson
In 2002, Statistics Canada invited several technology companies to compete for an opportunity to provide both hardware and software for use during the 2006 census. Lockheed Martin Canada was chosen in a fair and open competition; with its past census experience, it was the only company able to meet the technical and security-related criteria demanded by Statistics Canada.

For the past several months, critics have taken turns making any number of absurd allegations. But our objective remains unchanged -- to deliver a capable and reliable system that ensures the total accuracy, success and confidentiality of the 2006 census.

Lockheed Martin Canada will not stand by and allow the integrity of its employees to be challenged by critics who appear more interested in political gain (or absurd laughs) than the facts.

Wow I actually agree with his response! There is nothing funny about the PATRIOT Act and a company that deals in death as a way of turning profits. Nothing funny in that at all.

Its time to ramp up the efforts and expose these people for the death merchants that they are. Are they so blinded by greed and lust in their pursuit of profits that they can not see that Canadians do not want anything to do with death merchants and having our information pilfered by the Bush cabal?

I am going to send this to the newspaper as a retort to their response. If you can, please do the same with your own comments. This is our nation and it is our census, we have a right to demand who and how it is conducted.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

And a good retort it is Roy. I'll do a letter to LM and the Globe and Mail too.

You've got me beat, though...I do admit.

Here's the deal: Canadians DID want Lockheed to do the census. Ponder that for a moment while I continue... If you want to change things, why not get a job in the procurement office at Stat Can...work it from the inside, baby! I'll spoon feed you another one: why not get a job at Stat Can as a security expert and prove that Stat Can is/is not securing all of our data properly. After all, they hold it all forever and ever and ever... You are a "security professional by day", aren't you? You must know what you are talking about when you imply that our 1's and 0's are flying over the border, direct to the White House for ole George to look at day and night (pssst...he doesn't care about us...we don't mean anything to him...if you believe otherwise, you are sadly mistaken) You must have SOME proof that the U.S. is illegally taking our data and using it to destroy our way of life... You wouldn't lie to us, now would you?! I can make the same level headed accusations about you, Roy. "Roy is an peon security guard at the mall!" "Roy takes it up the butt!" "...death merchants..." where did you come up with that one? Did your kid brother help you with that one?

Now that I've probably worked you up into a nice proper lather (btw, white looks good on you), let's discuss my first point, shall we. Yes...Canadians DID want Lockheed to do the Census. Believe it or not, Canadians picked Lockheed Martin Canada, one of several bidding companies, to do the census (Yeah HUH! STAT CAN TOLD ME SO!). They obviously had a leg up on the competition solution wise (a little checking will tell you that they did the last US and the UK census just fine) and they had a better price according to Stat Can (*cough* that means they are saving us money over one of those other bidding companies that were trying to charge more for the same work). Yes... Canadians did pick Canadians to do the census (that little "Canada" on the back of "Lockheed Martin Canada" means that they are *gasp* CANADIANS!!! Holy *censored*ing shit! Who would have thunk it?!?!). Canadians picking Canadians to count Canadians. Wow. I'm tired just thinking of it.

My point is that we basically did this to ourselves. If you want to change it, fix it from the inside like smart people...not by ranting and raving like kids on a playground, smart ass. Did you read the *censored*ing letter? Do you understand that you are doing nothing more than creating laughter AND NOT POSITIVE CHANGE?!!?

Do you see how used the same tactic on you (got a few laughs and pissed you off, but you aren't going to change your mind because of my brash attitude and poor spelling). All you are doing is alienating yourselves from the people that will actually sit down and listen to your story, just as I have done with you good people tonight.

Signed, "Only half as crazy as that Roy guy" in Ottawa

It's not the employees I'm worried about. I's the owners who can't be trusted. It wouldn't matter if it was Air Canada or the Church of England running the census. Nobody but entrusted Government of Canada employees should handle information about Canadian's private lives.

This is just a bullshit defence. Trying to make us feel guilty for having the guts to stand up to them. Sorry to be so blunt, but may they fry in hell.

remove the angry conservative retort above - it offers nothing and only helps to reinforce the idea that far right is nothing more than a gaggle of angry people.

Another anonymous poster so sure of what he has to say that he's afraid to type in a proper alias.

There is no getting away from the fact that under the Patriot Act Lockheed Martin would share our information with the US. Saying that the US doesn't care about Canadians and their data is a nonsensical argument...the US government has targeted certain Canadians for a very long time and for a lot of different reasons...from Farley Mowatt to Maher Arar.

I'm a lefty. Remove my post and you are no better than GWB, Asscroft, & Rummy.

"under the Patriot Act Lockheed Martin would share our information with the US"

Lockheed doesn't have your information...you give it to STAT CAN. They collect it. They process it. The store it. LM/IBM is only doing the software and the hardware that will be used by Stat Can. Stat Can is running the show.

What are you talking about with the Patriot Act? I don't get it.

  9. Fri May 21, 2004 4:39 am
    Exactly, you DON'T get it.

  10. Fri May 21, 2004 4:44 am
Anon, you need to read more than one post, there is plenty of info on this site, that will help you get the connection between LM and the Patriot Act and whether you agree or not, you would do yourself a favor to get all the facts on this issue.

OOH! Sounds like somebody in the anonymous category stands to lose money if the census is returned back to the people! And no, the Canadian people did not want Lougheed Martin to do the census! Most people in Canada didn`t know about it until the sellouts made up their minds about it!

The P+CEO of Lockheed Martin CANADA, Mr. Dan Spoor, is an American. GASP! Adding Canada to the Lockheed Martin name is as repulsive as putting "Ture Patriot" next to the hot cup of Tim Hortons coffee on a billboard.

Anyone up for responding to Lockheed Canada?

It could be...informative to point out the errors they included in this
    defense.

Tristan, I am up for responding to that LM diatribe but I think it is a waste of time to send it to them because they only have one goal in mind. They would like to distract us, to get us focused on them instead of who hired them and why they won't publish the bids.
As I see it, even if the data was secure what reason does the government have to hire a corporation like that to do some programming. This is just political largesse(generous giving of gifts).
