Their Flag, Our Blood

The photograph is the most famous from the war, hailed for its dramatic symmetry and emotional impact, and was replicated on monuments at home, merchandise, and a U.S. postage stamp that became the biggest-selling of all time. Three of the five Marines and one Naval corpsman were killed in action shortly after it was taken. The other three came home: John Bradley, Ira Hayes and Rene Gagnon. Bradley, right until his 1994 death, refused all interviews. He'd have family members tell reporters over the phone he was incommunicado fishing somewhere in Canada. He'd never been to Canada, he didn't fish. In the Eastwood movie Ira Hayes, an American Indian, is portrayed by Canadian Adam Beach, an actor from Ottawa, who is also Native. The story of Ira Hayes is one of tragedy. A war hero, he came home and was treated like dirt. Because he was "just" an Indian. He took to the bottle and his saga was told in a movie starring Tony Curtis, and a song by Johnny Cash among others, The Ballad Of Ira Hayes. http://www.ottawasun.com/News/Columnists/McRae_Earl/2006/10/19/pf-2067875.html

With all due respect to Mr. Ganon, I would be quite happy to leave a canadian connection out of this propaganda movie. The shameful tactics of the pentagons hollywood recruitment machine is, I hope, as obvious as putting candy sprinkles on dog crap. Too many really well meaning men died on that island to disrespect their memory by using it as a recruitment tool for a corrupt government. Shame on you Mr. Eastwood.

not have seen the movie I cannot comment on its message. Is it possable Mr Eastwood is showing through his film the slavish adherence to propaganda, or how readily the public wants to believe?

You people must be right out of it Propaganda? Its a movie about brave yng men that died for Freedom. Its about men who were willing to risk everything. Most people now adays have no willingness to do such things. It just proves it here every day I log on.

&#8220;What do we want from war films? Entertainment, mostly, a few hours&#8217; escape to other lands and times, as well as something excitingly different, something reassuringly familiar. If &#8220;Flags of Our Fathers&#8221; feels so unlike most war movies and sounds so contrary to the usual political rhetoric, it is not because it affirms that war is hell, which it does with unblinking, graphic brutality. It&#8217;s because Mr. Eastwood insists, with a moral certitude that is all too rare in our movies, that we extract an unspeakable cost when we ask men to kill other men. There is never any doubt in the film that the country needed to fight this war, that it was necessary; it is the horror at such necessity that defines &#8220;Flags of Our Fathers,&#8221; not exultation.&#8221;<br />

Only here their out of step. All the uniformed, peace freaks. That are so smart the stupid. Going 5 yrs to university does not make you smart. Thats what my father used to say. I have a yr of College, 27 yrs in the military making 70+K. My brother an engineer, 4 yrs university 5 yrs military. Makes 30 K. Whos the dumb one here.
But ask any of his university friends about the world, they know squat.
So maybe some of you get out of TO, Van, Vic and go and see the real world. Stop drinking Ice Caps.
    The movie is not propaganda.

I told you so, you never heard of that. All the education in the world cannot prepare you for the world. If you dont have the world educate you.

Okay! Will 1 year make you smart or taking orders for 27 years? You still got 8 more years to get a pension and do as your told untill then. Wearing a uniform in a foreign country don't make you blend in nor learn from the locals. Learning about the world from within a military agenda isn't the best way to "learn" about the world. Infact the perspective is not real.

One may assume your father had little book learning.

Whether or not the movie is propaganda I don't know, I haven't seen it yet.

I hope it ends up being something along the lines of "Saving Private Ryan" myself, and that film was definitely not propaganda in my view.

And one question for you, Armyguy.

When was the last time you were ever under fire in the field, or saw combat?

My dad told me about guys like you, said your type talked tough while in training but cried like babies when push came to shove.
