Layton Slams Martin, Harper On Health Care As Pre-Election Rhetoric Heats Up

Posted on Friday, April 09 at 08:46 by KevinGagnon

Layton told a group of health-care activists and regional NDP candidates that Prime Minister Paul Martin is paving the way for privatized health care. "What kind of a system has Paul Martin built: one that says, 'You're OK if you're wealthy, you're OK if you're lucky, but if you're not, you'll simply be left behind?' "

CBC had excerpts from an interview with Harper & he tried to dodge the health care thing by saying that (paraphrased) there should be a role for the private sector in the health system. he didn't say it should be privatised or 2-tier, but just that there should be a role for private sector.

I also e-mailed Layton, reminding him that if he were the only person to promise to proceed with Romanow's recommendations, that he could theoretically sweep the country. The Canadian people have been slow to come back to the NDP, but we KNOW they are bull-headed when it comes to health care. Touch it, and DIE.....and the Liberals, Conservatives are touching it.

I got two e-mail responses to my e-mails to Layton and another NDP member (forget who) respectively. They weren't personalized, but maybe they're starting to listen to our the complaints about a lack of replies? :) Anyone else starting to get replies?

I liked the CP piece, but wish they wouldn't call Harper's gang the "Tories."

Jack Layton should get a copy of the Liberals red book and the next time some Liberal Flack says "the prime minister has committed to..." he should wave the red book at this person and ask how many of the red books "contract with canadians" promises were kept. Paul Martin co-wrote the book so what can we expect from a person who dishonors and then ignores contracts when the promissee's are ordinary Canadians. The man is an out and out liar and he should be shown as such. He says "we will not change health care except to improve it", then he says "we will meet with the Premiers and hammer out a plan for improving the plan and there will be no disagreements". The guy lies out loud in front of reporters and they don't call him on it. King Ralph was happy at what he heard Martin saying and Ralphy wants P3's. If he can run to put a law to protect the recording industry from up and down loading terrorists then he can pass a law saying that no privatization of the health care plan will be allowed in Canada without being so ordered by a public referendum open to all Canadian citizens.

As for the Conservatives and their "spending more money is not the only way", bullshit, at the end of the day the bills have to be paid and if the private sector is in any way involved then the bills will be more than what they would be without their involvement. The government can borrow money for less than the private sector can. Do the math. If this is not the case then they should disclose the research paper that shows private involvement of actual corp.s in actual P3 scenarios so that we can check their figures.

Kevin good job keeping them on track, I also believe that we do influence those who really want our vote, there are others who 'think' they have it and couldn't care less what we say...so I think you are on the right track...and I think Layton is the guy for this election anyway!

    Perturbed,

Yes I got a reply. It was the first reply of 3 emails I sent. I think Jack Layton is starting to realize that health care should be his major focus in attracting votes. Enviroment is important, but to attract more votes across Canada. Health care should be his major focus.

The NDP need to make it known amongst all Canadians that Liberal's and Conservatives will pave a path for a private health care system. To tell you the truth I think that if Layton had put his TV ads promoting the Romanow report, and attacking the Liberal's and Conservatives for their privatization plans. He would have seen a gain in the polls.

Let's all email him encouraging him to use TV ads that show him promoting a Universal Public Health Care system/Romanow Report. In the ad he should also point out the Liberal and Conservative plans to privatize.

I still don't know exactly where Layton stands on free trade, but I believe that is another election issue that if he used it, he can gain more support.

    Kevin
