According to sources, the RCMP, which has been investigating Nortel's "financial accounting situation" since 2004, is focusing on the telephone equipment maker's financial results dating back to the fourth quarter of 2002 and the first two quarters of 2003.
Beatty and Gollogly reported to Frank Dunn, 53, Nortel's chief executive officer at the time.
Dunn was fired "for cause" in 2004 after the company announced it would have to restate its financial results.
Lawyers representing the former Nortel executives were not available for comment on Friday.
Corp. Cathy McCrory, RCMP media relations officer, Ontario division, said: "We don't comment on anything ongoing."
According to sources familiar with the police probe who spoke on condition of anonymity, RCMP officials took the unusual step of meeting separately with Beatty and Gollogly and their lawyers to provide a preview of the criminal fraud case against them.
