U Of Saskatchewan Rally Against BMD

Chinese and US analysts describe the system in the very same words: it is a "sword," not a "shield." And they are of course well aware that the US has a policy of first-use of nuclear weapons when it chooses. We know from declassified US records how the US reacted to a very small ABM system that the Russians constructed in 1968: by targeting it with advanced nuclear missiles to ensure that any defense would be instantly overwhelmed. Strategic analysts today warn that current US "missile-defense" plans will virtually impel the Russians to respond the same way, and will also provoke a Chinese reaction, since "the credibility of its nuclear retaliatory deterrent will be fundamentally challenged." We also know that the Russians -- and probably soon the Chinese -- are being driven to place their offensive military weapons on automated response. US systems, which regularly give false warnings, leave 3 minutes for human intervention to cancel a programmed nuclear attack. Russians systems are far less reliable, Chinese as well. It is "an accident waiting to happen," one leading US strategic analyst writes -- an accident that will bring biology's only experiment with higher intelligence to an inglorious end. If Canadians choose to contribute to likely destruction of the species, they should at least do it with eyes open, not under the illusion that they are defending themselves. Like Chomsky has stated, it is important to ask is it really defense? I think not. I agree with him fully. In everything that has to do with Defense, there is always the offensive side of it. Personally, when it comes to Bush, there is no such thing as defense. As for me, the only defense I believe in is the anti-virus on my computer but even that has flaws.

What about the NORAD amendment? That would have to be rescinded or we have BMD by proxy if not officially.

Then why did our US Ambassador just say that we are already in Missile "Defence"?

As a cynic I woud like to say those comments by McKenna were intended, but I can't see how they would be beneficial to the Martin government. There does appear to be a stinging contradiction here. I think McKenna got carried away and faces a scolding the PM.

Sounds like good news, but as they say, don`t be too quick to count the chickens just yet. Now, after this, how about these people like Layton and Mel Hurtig doing something similar for public health care, or perhaps organize some similar type of rally in support of scrapping NAFTA? because we all know how NAFTA handcuffs our government from implementing progressive social policy.

First - McKenna is not the Ambassador yet.

Second, most Canadians support NORAD, but not ballistic missile defence.

NORAD should be used to identify any incoming problems. Then deal accordingly. If xyz nation is dumb enough to fire a missile (which will only happen by mistake), the exact launch point will be identified not only by NORAD, but by just about every nation with spy satellites in space. There is nowhere on earth that a missile can be launched (other than a sub) that cannot be traced back to the source. NMD is weapons in space, NORAD is not. NMD is creating an arms race, NORAD will not. Big difference.

That's unreal that Chomsky took the time to send them a letter.
