U.S. Warns Ottawa About Lumber Bailout

Posted on Thursday, February 16 at 09:53 by Anonymous
"We believe that it will help the progress of such discussions if no new issues, such as the granting of additional subsidies, emerge," she told a Senate trade subcommittee. After the hearing, Ms. Schwab said her boss, U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman, and Canadian Trade Minister David Emerson talked on the phone last week, but have not yet agreed to resume talks. "Both of them obviously have an interest in resolving the softwood lumber issue," she said. "But there are no negotiations and no new contacts." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060215.RSOFTWOOD15/TPStory/Business [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on February 16, 2006]

Hey, Washington. There`s no more negotiation! You lost- over and over and over! You make the rules, then you break them when you don`t have the advantage. So to hell with you! Get your lumber from somewhere else! And hey, Harper. Maybe I`m living in technicolour here, but for once- STAND UP FOR CANADA! ( Wasn`t that your big campaign slogan?)

Hey chowderheaded US trade rep, warn all you want. You don't like how we run things in our own country, no big deal. We can always find markets for our lumber products in Japan, Europe, China, Austrailia.

So go ahead, pose and rattle your economic sabres.

You will no doubt sleep well knowing that US housing construction jobs will be lost due to a shortage of good Canadian lumber.

While we're at it, how about we pull the plug on our "subsidized" hydroelectric exports to your bloated resource wasting ass while we're at it?

U.S. official - "you had better not do that"
Canadian official - "go screw yourself"

It needs to be said at some point. Clearly negotiating with the crooks hasn't worked, so let's talk their language.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

Obviously the Americans do not want any Canadian companies logging in Canada. They will insure their own logging companies will be taken care of, on both sides of the border. They will squeeze and squeeze Canadians untill no Canadian company will survive. It's now up to Harper, as to how he will abet them. Perhaps Premier Campbell will pass on a few tips.

What are the chances that $1.5 billion bailout will go the the workers whose jobs were summarily disposed of, in order to free up the funds to pay the tariff, and still provide record profits for the sharholders of the lumber companies....?

    Tell that to Alberta.

None. Few are corporate owners and entitled to nothing under the capitalist system. Could also be why Campbell cut back on entitlement to Human Resources.

Alberta, that little piece of America we get to call our own.

You do realize that most of the people who bring you Vive Le Canada are Albertan, right?

Alberta is in a position of owning what everyone else wants. Klein has already said that the oil belongs to Alberta and not to Canada. I'm not sure any other province would act differently. Canada can not restrict the sale of oil to the USA if not in possession of the black gold. BUT Canada could impose export duties and the rest of Canadians enjoy those proceeds. HOWEVER, the animosity from Klein would estrange Albertans from the rest of Canada. What purpose would that plan be? Estrange Americans and other citizens of Canada. The Americans are not worth it!

You are now saying Albertans are in possession of this blog and control it as well. Perhaps then other Canadians shouldn't participate. Is that what you are suggesting?

No, I'm saying that Vive has always been run by Albertans for the good of all Canadians. If you like Vive and it's mission and it's message, perhaps people shouldn't paint all Albertans with the 'America Jr.' brush. Rather hypocritical to do so, don't you think?

Same bias for me. One of my jobs as moderator and as a Canadian is to stop the 'us vs them' and 'east vs west' divisiveness whenever I encounter it. :)
