Army To Occupy Downtown Winnipeg

Posted on Saturday, January 07 at 13:55 by Brent
The drill is designed to simulate the kind of complex conditions soldiers would encounter in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq, where conventional warfare is conducted simultaneously with humanitarian relief operations and nation-building, said Col. Kelly Woiden, commander of 38 Brigade.

Urban battlefields are sometimes known as "three-block wars" because troops could help people on one block, fight insurgents on another, and guard convoys on another, Woiden explained.

"We're going to create a realistic environment of the situation that individual soldiers can face today," he said. "You could be doing humanitarian relief one moment and then fighting a war the next. It is the most complicated terrain for a soldier."

The operation is also part of a long-term plan to prepare 200 of the brigade's soldiers to support a 1,000-person task force in 2008, if necessary, he said. Source [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on January 9, 2006]

What do you think Doc? Is this really for Afghanistan or is the federal government losing confidence in Canada's ability to refrain from revolting against them? :)

wow. This is funny on at least three levels.

First: the timeline "beginning April 30 next year". Since this is January 2006, that means April 2007, n'est pas?

Yet another example of canadian swift and decisive action, eh? Like the DART, taking two weeks to rent a plane to get to the tsunami region?

Second: URBAN warfare in CANADA?
Ha. Why not Arctic training? Why not marine defense? Why not defending the border from an American invasion?

But urban? The one thing canada has very little of...

Third: Winterpeg? Why not Tronno, or Ott'wa, or Montreal? Some place that actually has known terrorists.

Which army? Who's supervising? Who's watching? Do any foreigners have a role in this?

I think it's a really excellent training opportunity. It's not unlike training that's being done in Alberta recently. The only difference is that instead of 'villiagers' being reserves and RCMP, some will be actual 'residents'. It's about as real as they can make it.

Winnipeg is a big time Millitary town, I'm sure they'll love the opportunity too. Now, If I can figure out how to get shaving cream to explode from the trunk of my car when they 'search' me :)

From TFA:

The mission

What: Operation Charging Bison will involve 500 troops training in downtown Winnipeg.
Who: The operation is run by 38 Brigade.
Why: It’s designed to train troops in urban warfare.
Where: A base camp will be set up on the western edge of the city, but most of the exercises will take place in the downtown.
When: Day and night between April 30 and May 6.

I understand "the Mission." However, I am seriously suspicious of extras that aren't stated.

Funny thing: back in november the military was doing a training exercise in Welland, next to a Dodge dealer, and I had to take my van in for repairs. I yelled across to the uniformed men manning rather large machine guns, saying, " Hey guys! How about we go and overthrow the government and start over?" One soldier looked at me with a puzzled look on his face and said ," Um, yeah." But one car salesman heard me yell this to the soldiers and said to me, " Hey, I`m with you!"

If you look up the 'Who', it will answer the rest of your questions.

38 CBG, is commanded by Col. Kelly Woiden, that's who supervising.

Who's watching? Probabally his bosses. And, most of downtown Winnipeg.

Since 38 CBG is a reserve unit, odds are no forgieners are part of it. Exchange soldiers are usually in with regular forces.
bless the poets
EVERYBODY KNOWS
(from the album 'COHEN LIVE')

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
and/or this

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I don't like your fashion business mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby ...

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I am guided

Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
