USDA Says Canadian Cattle Pose 'minimal Risk'

Posted on Thursday, December 30 at 09:36 by Perturbed
"After conducting an extensive review, we are confident that imports of certain commodities from regions of minimal risk can occur with virtually no risk to human or animal health. Our approach is consistent with guidelines established by the World Organization for Animal Health, or OIE, and relies on appropriate, science- based risk mitigation measures." The new rules take effect March 7. http://sympaticomsn.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1104350989316_99760189?hub=topstories [edit: and hot on it's heels: (Dr. Caleb)] http://www.canada.com/national/story.html?id=95c675e7-95d6-4d22-a782-085bcdffadeb

Canadians should not be eating beef unless it is organically grown or 100% tested for BSE. Period.

"minimul risk" is too much. If anyone believes our Canadian Food Inspection Agency is working towards our food safety they are sadly mistaken. There has been enough info on this site and again here: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1103294394931_29?s_name=&no_ads= that gives such contradictory information one would be wise not to believe the CFIA. In this article it is still stating that there is "risk" for BSE and that the "...federal regulators last week proposed banning high-risk material from animal feed, pet foods and fertilizers." They are still "proposing", they have done nothing to actually "eliminate" the problem yet expect us to have confidence in the job they are doing? No. And no one should trust the USA inspection agency either. They are "shooting, shovelling, and shutuping" as thoroughly as the CFIA.
Ban beef until organic is the rule.
This case of mad cow is a load of bullsh*t. The disease was found in a 10 YEAR OLD DAIRY COW. Feeder STEERS are what go into your steak and AA or AAA grade beef at the grocery store. Only McDonald's buys those old scabby cattle at the auction. Ask any farmer. They buy grade A beef and mix in a bit of AAA to call it AA beef. Unless you are eating old dairy cows, you are at low risk. The media is just hyping it. They dont report the difference between a feeder steer and a 10 year old cow that is on its way to the rendering plant. In that case, the dog food supply, if anything, is at risk.

    Damn right!

Shut down the Canadian Beef Industry from within!

    Organic Tofu for everyone!

    Screw the Canuck ranchers!

I agree 4Canada, we need to demand better, the ranchers can and will deliver, it's up to us to demand what we want, and that should be a good, healthy food supply. The big corporations are the ones who don't like testing, want to use hormones to grow faster, not better and contaminate the food supply with extras; they care about the bottom line, not the quality. If we don't buy it, they will produce what we will buy! You are right!

BSE scare was a hoax perpetrated by the American finance and media to shoot down a quickly rising Canadian Currency.

I listened to a Chicago based finance guy on the internet radio with quite a following, about his Aktins diet, and that he was a big beef eater. Now, beef futures were skyrocketed during that time in late 2003, just before they pulled the rug out from Alberta beef, collapsing beef futures and hammering the Ccanadian dollar. Was this guy a big believer in Atkins diet and eating beef? We'll never know, but I could never figure out why, out of the blue, he was talk about this, since he dealt mostly with macro economic and currency news. Only later did I put two and two together. He was 'priming the pump' in trader language, for a 'dump'

You vivers should watch the finance world, that's where these stories get dreamt up. Making money ahead of the crowd..That is the game, and they don't give a fig newton if a couple hundred thousand Canadian beef farmers lose their shirts, in fact they are GLAD, because that money just went into Financial traders pockets. New York, London, TelAviv, Chicago, etc.. they're raping the world blind. Bend over for some more, and more and more.

Seems some Alberta people got wind of these phoney scheme to 'verbally' taint their herds, and brought in an independant English scientist to get to the root of the fake media campaign that lays the blame on animal waste getting in the food chain. That's what big media wants you to believe. But the truth is that BSE originates from phosphates from fertilers entering the food chain and that would mean the big fertilers and GMO companies taking the fall, so this news is never reported in the media. Even the media in the small AB town I live in. For instance, some of the BSE con got exposed and the editor was sacked. Where did they bring in the new editor? Why , he came from England.. ! go figure. Can't have any truth or real investigative reporting in our local paper dontcha know, now be good slaves and get back to work!!

    fertilers = fertilizer

Oh, absolutely, everything involving Canada-US trade is designed to destroy Canadian self-sufficiency, so that the uS and the corporations can swallow it up after farmers, workers, etc. go broke! You don`t think big corporations like Tyson, or Monsanto, aren`t salivating at the prospect of owning that fertile prairie belt? That`s just naming their minimum aspiration, of course. Serfdom is making a comeback!

I'm constantly amazed that this topic has to be discussed. I don't understand why organic food has become the "exception" to our food sources and why anyone would object to my wanting it so? It just blows my mind that anyone would choose GMO or steroid filled or meat fed cattle over what you may find wandering or growing on the plains of Eden.

Oh, I agree that it sucks that organic food has become an expensive luzury, rather than a mandated thing. I do think pesticides should be allowed in extreme cases in at least some farms, but there's no reason we can't legislate for health.

It just begs the question, what really caused mad cow disease, and who is responsible?

Hey, 4Canada, your argument (and a very correct one) is another reason why Canada should NEVER integrate with the US! Monsanto, Tyson, are two US corporations doing the most heavy pushing to ram GM foods and factory farms down our throats.
