Council Of Canadians Election Coverage Or Spokesperson?

Posted on Thursday, December 22 at 15:56 by whelan costen
The CBC is promoted as the voice of Canadians. We have deep concerns over the $1 billion taxpayers fund every year for an independent voice, when it is anything but independent. We have empathy for the journalists, reporters and writers who are struggling to bring Canadians all views but are hampered by the corporate influence. So although we strongly disagree with the posturing on CBC’s website Canada votes, we understand. What we do not understand is the Council of Canadians website posturing. You are a widely respected group of dedicated individuals who are accepted by Canadians as informed and willing to speak truth. As you point harsh fingers at the militarization of Canada, the lack of peace in the world, the unfair trade deals, the horrific treatment of human beings in Canada and around the world, the lack of foreign aid, the lack of commitment to Kyoto, the failure of government to eradicate poverty, the duplicity of the BMD and on and on; you fail to point out that there is one, and only one legally registered political party in Canada with the political will to address all of the issues. Why are we left wondering about the direction of the Council of Canadians? In short because you have taken the road promoted by mainstream media, which addresses none of the issues. When you suggest here are your 5 choices (Liberal, Conservative, Bloc, NDP or Green) and here are their policies, and then you have another category called ‘other’ you clearly point to Canadian Action Party as ‘other’ implying not a ‘real choice’. When in fact we are the only ‘real choice’. We are the only voice that states unequivocally we must abrogate NAFTA now! We are the only voice that is fearlessly educating Canadians about the threats to our freedoms. We are the only party that will protect our water, our natural resources. We are the only party that clearly stands for a return to the use of the Bank of Canada to remove the incredible burden of debt on the backs of all Canadians. The debt, which prevents us from fully supporting our publicly funded healthcare, education, seniors programs and prevents us from addressing poverty in Canada and around the world. As long as we continue to feed the corporate machine, via the banks, we will never be able to meet our commitments to foreign aid! So when you promote a section of your website to election issues, but fail to even discuss the options available you are doing a disservice to Canadians. Your token side note suggesting, here are the other parties if you are interested and then give them a link to our website, is insulting at best! Why don’t you explain? Do you really believe that Canada will gain its independence or rise above the corporate rule, through the prominent political parties you are promoting? So when we declare that you are sending mixed messages, we then are forced to ask why? Why would you not at the very least, list Canadian Action Party as a viable choice? You are stating firmly what the problems are but then you lead the people to 5 choices which will not rectify the problems. They will not because they cannot. They are controlled by corporate dollars. They are not part of the solution. They are the problem. You and other Canadians have been fighting this losing battle for many years with no positive results. Why do you continue on a fruitless path, when there is another option? You have an excellent section called Tell Your Candidates and then you list five things to tell them: TELL CANDIDATES YOU WANT THEM TO: Stop private health care This federal election, demand that candidates stop health care privatization in Canada. Develop a better trade policy for Canada This federal election, demand that candidates support a better trade policy for Canada. Establish a “made-in-Canada” energy strategy This federal election, demand that candidates commit to a “made in Canada” energy strategy that allows Canadians to pay a fair price for our energy. Protect Canadian water This federal election, demand that candidates support a national water policy that protects Canadian water from commercialization and bulk exports. Promote peace at home and abroad This federal election, demand that candidates continue to say “no” to Ballistic Missile Defence, and work to re-establish Canada’s role as an international peacekeeper. Canadian Action Party candidates are 100% supportive of these 5 statements. Our policy is founded on these and more. The most encouraging element is that the people of Canada do not have to convince their CAP candidate to promote this ideology because it is ours. When we are elected we will not turn away from the mandate of the people of Canada in favour of corporate influence. We are the people’s party. Is it not the purpose of the Council of Canadians to expose the problems and offer solutions? Would it be a valid observation to say that Council of Canadians would be redundant if the problems you expose were solved and therefore, it is your own survival you are protecting? We are not asking you to promote Canadian Action Party. We are not asking that you tell Canadians that they have only one real viable choice in this election, even though it is truth. We are asking you to be the other voice. The voice that says here are the political parties, which support our ideology or parts of our ideology. Here you will find the Canadian Action Party, some of the NDP policies, some of the Green Party policies. The NDP has made several good suggestions but they come up short. You quote Ms Alexa McDonough several times in your email, however if you are serious about protecting our water, our nation, then Abrogating NAFTA must be strongly encouraged. We recommend that in your 'other section', you highlight those parties which do not support your ideology. These are the 'other' choices, which do not support peace, healthy societies, environmental issues, a thriving society, protecting our water and our nation's freedom and sovereignty. If it is your mandate to be a 'council of Canadians', then why are you projecting an image of spokespeople, for the parties that threaten the demise of Canada? If it is your mandate to expose truth, then why do you mask it? Are you serious about the threats you expose? Are you serious about offering Canadians direction? You may suggest that you do not have that authority however, your voice does carry authority and you speak with it on your website and in all your correspondence. We urge you to consider the contents of this letter and help to save this country before it is too late. You have a role to play. You have a mission and you have declared yourselves to be the voice of concerned Canadians. We urge you to follow that declaration! Yours truly Catherine Whelan Costen Canadian Action Party President with Bev Collins Canadian Action Party Vice President Cc : Media www.canadianactionparty.ca [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on December 22, 2005]

Catherine Whelan Costen: This seems wrong, for you to take over
an informative on-line news web-site for the purpose of
electioneering. This is not OK. This is "muscling-in."

You can surely conduct your attack on Maude Barlowe through
private correspondence. This kind of public display makes me feel
    very uncomfortable.

If FREE ADVERTISING becomes the new normal for Vive le
Canada, it won't be long before the site is unreadable.

BC Mary, you are free to read or not to read. Vive's mission is to protect and defend our Canadian Sovereignty, this letter was copied to the press, vive is part of that. There is nothing in this letter which is contrary to vive's mission.

Do you call other posters views 'free advertising'? Are the numerous satires from Calumny free advertising? Anyone is free to submit, so why are you attacking me for allowing Canadians to know all the facts in this election?

Public Display of what, makes you uncomfortable? Patriotism, fair voting, fair election coverage? Where do you stand BC Mary?

If I stand for my country today...will my country be here to stand for me tomorrow?

Just to expand on my comment above, I have been posting on vive since its very early days, posting news from other sources, adding my opinion wherever I felt my voice was warranted. The reasons I came to vive have never changed, I want to save Canada.

The fact that now my name is associated with a political party changes nothing. We have been encouraging posters to post original material, rather than repost from somewhere else. This is original material, and we are in the middle of an election, and this section is called election section. What do you think should fit in the election section?

The election issues perhaps? This is a big one.

Catherine Costen: I support your position and as far as BC Mary goes, well she would like things to stay just the way they are. Like the old saying goes " Pigs will eat their own over time" and BC Mary has to be one of those old line party dog who is along for the ride as long as she on the train.

I may disagree with you Catherine on the the party system, as you know, I do not like political parties because of past history.

But I will support your line of thinking as you truly do believe in Canada and that you want nothing but good for Canada.
The only place we disagee is how we get their... you say we need a party to achieve it and I say we do not.

I too have questions and concerns where and what the Council of Canadians stand for.. they could turn out to be another Buzz Hargrove and leave any political party waiting at the alter, just like Buzz did with the NDP.

Good Luck Chatherine and Merry Christmas and the best in 2006 .

I am more oncerned with the following issues, not there delivery where do you stand BCMary?

TELL CANDIDATES YOU WANT THEM TO:
    Stop private health care
This federal election, demand that candidates stop health care privatization in Canada.
Develop a better trade policy for Canada
This federal election, demand that candidates support a better trade policy for Canada.
    Establish a “made-in-Canada” energy strategy
This federal election, demand that candidates commit to a “made in Canada” energy strategy that allows Canadians to pay a fair price for our energy.
    Protect Canadian water
This federal election, demand that candidates support a national water policy that protects Canadian water from commercialization and bulk exports.
Promote peace at home and abroad
This federal election, demand that candidates continue to say “no” to Ballistic Missile Defence, and work to re-establish Canada’s role as an international peacekeeper.

Is it safe to say,BCMary, that your view(s) concern themselves with what is 'right' or 'proper' ?

because if that is the case while your slavish adherence to those Arbitrary concepts go quite unnoticed by the politicians of the three English speaking parties.
The decisions handed down to the Libs, and Bush’s Canadian clone; Harper as well as that of Layton are scripted by those who own them.

I want to thank Staff Sarg. William Miller for presenting his positiion on the party system here in Canada. To day we have Vets from the Second World War still not being reconizxed for their service... yet some punk elected party sheep will do two terms in office skinning the life out of we the tax payer and this punk will get a mighty fine pension.

People like Mr. Miller took bullets in the name of this myth word "democracy" and all they got was shit and shoved in it.

I served in peace time , but during this time was treated as a guinea pig for our"Canadian Party Government" to cover myself and many other with chemicals ... agent orange..purple .. white.. we will never see a pension or any other kind of help. Why.. because the party politica;l system feeds their own first and trust me.. those who served for this country will starve to death before they see help.

Homeless and foodbanks are the new economy of Canada and the reason unemployment is down is because , the birth rate is down ...the older working population is retiring and if your not on the unemployment registery, then your not a number. Lies deceit and party bullshit .

I love my country , but i cannot stand the fact we are being raped and treated like the politicians whore.

As I agree with many of CAP's views and directions, as I'm sure many Canadians would, I am not opposed to them finding any means necessary to get their message out. However from the same point, I guess I should not be upset to see anything from a Republican (Conservative)on here either. Free speach is truely what it's all about. But I do agree, strongly, that Canadians should be given information, by our own media, of all our options. I'd love to see Cap and Green in the televised debates. Unfortunetly CAP does not have a candidate in my area (St-Boniface, WPG), so I will be forced to make a different choice. But to the CAP, good luck, I will be keeping an eye out for you in the future.

I disagree Mary, Vive is about politics along with other topics. If Paul Martin or Steven Harper wrote an opinion piece and submitted it to Vive, you can bet it would be published too, even if it was decidely partisan.

P.S. Don't take this as being a hostile reply, I have great respect for your opinions, I just don't agree in this case.

  12. Fri Dec 23, 2005 6:09 pm
Wow. So much for free speech. What rotten things to say to
somebody who expresses an opinion. If anyone feels a need to
know what I think, or whether I am "a pig" or not, why not ask me in
a civil way. Express your opinion, not your hatred.

To explain further, I found this item by Catherine Whalen Costen
(who I usually agree with) to be unfair to Maude Barlow, for
starters: surely the Council of Canadians isn't a threat -- why trash
them publicly without giving their side of the issue.

    2) Until the leaders of 3 or 4 other political parties come onto
Vive le Canada with their personal correspondence, I will continue
to see this kind of C.A.P. usage of these pages to be self-serving,
self-important, and manipulative. Write an informative story,
Catherine. Don't just blat Barlow Bad, Barlow Bad. Maude Barlow
deserves better. So do Vive readers.

The only other time I have objected to somebody using an on-line
news service as a means of FREE ADVERTISING was when (on
another web-site) a business kept offering itself as a great public
service -- complete with business name -- by a failed candidate for
the leadership of the Reform Party.

CAP itself may be OK but whenever any segment of the news
media is being given a personal warp, I intend to speak up.
CanWest Global has enough tricks of the trade and all
too often, those tricks become a cover-up for something which
should be fully exposed to the light of day. If CAP has such an
issue, let it be explained clearly and civilly. Why start off a new
    party with dirty politics.

  13. Fri Dec 23, 2005 6:49 pm
I agree with BcMary that this post would truely benefit from whatever reply was given. Am I wrong to assume the Coucil of Canadians would have quickly replied to this? If so, please post whatever response was received. Thank you.

  14. Fri Dec 23, 2005 8:20 pm
When there is a reply I will certainly post it. If the Council of Canadians was offereing fair unbiased election coverage I would not have written the letter. They are posturing one way and delivering something else. If it is acceptable to point out Canwest or other media failings on this forum, then it is certainly acceptable to point out a so called, 'non-partisan' groups partisan politics.

The Council of Canadians has done good work, they have helped expose the problems, but by not offering all options to the voters they are misleading. If democracy was at work in this country, there would not be a need for internet forums. If the Greens, the NDP, Cons or Lib wanted to post something on vive to give another point of view, or some of their supporters, they are free to do so. I cannot speak for them, nor will I attempt to. They have their modes of informing, they have tax payers money to use in an election to express their point of view. We are asking that if a website is going to present options to Canadians, especially a website dedicated to soveriegnty and protecting our rights in a free nation, then they could at least offer information on all the options.

Instead of attacking me for exposing this, why don't you ask Maude Barlow, maybe you can get an answer?
