OTTAWA—Canada's new defence minister may be quick off the mark next week and announce some long-awaited good news for the military — a replacement for the aging fleet of Sea King helicopters, sources say.

One scenario has the new minister making the announcement just two days after the Liberal cabinet is sworn in Tuesday.

"It's probably 50-50 whether they blast off within days," said one government source. "But it's something that will happen in the near term."

Deja vu? The contract was awarded by the Mulroney cabinet, what, 12 years ago?<p> Since then, the Liberals cancelled it at a cost of $50 million, then re-contracted it to favour one company, then re-did the specs again to favour two companies . . . strangely non of those companies are Canadian.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

They should build tham in Canada, but you know our government...I think Chretien actually paid 500 million, not 50 million, which is funny. Pay a foreign company big bucks to NOT do something. Putrid.
