Mohamed ElBaradei: No Evidence Iran Building Nuclear Weapons

Posted on Tuesday, October 30 at 13:32 by a free mans life
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has raised the prospect of "serious consequences" if Iran were found to be working toward developing a nuclear weapon. Last week, the Bush administration announced harsh penalties against the Iranian military and state-owned banking systems in hopes of raising pressure on the world financial system to cut ties with Tehran. ElBaradei said he was worried about the growing rhetoric from the U.S., which he noted focused on Iran's alleged intentions to build a nuclear weapon rather than evidence the country was actively doing so. If there is actual evidence, ElBaradei said he would welcome seeing it. "I'm very much concerned about confrontation, building confrontation, because that would lead absolutely to a disaster. I see no military solution. The only durable solution is through negotiation and inspection," he said. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/10/28/america/NA-GEN-US-Iran.php [Proofreader’s note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on October 31, 2007]

    There was (and still is) no evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction as well.

    ??? Yes there was. The US has the receipts.

    Well yes, once upon a time Iraq had some (but not all) of the weapons the Bush regime claimed it had, and as you've indicated the US gov helped Iraq obtain the weapons for use against Iran, however prior to the US invasion of Iraq, all of those weapons were destroyed leaving the Bush regime without a valid reason to invade.

    With respect to Iran, there's never been any evidence to suggest that Iran is building anything but a nuclear power plant which it has a legitimate right to be doing.

    Once again, the Bush regime is left without a valid reason to be attacking Iran.

    One more thing, by using the US's warped sense of logic, the US should bomb and then invade itself for possessing weapons of mass destruction and for building even more of them.

    The problem with Iraq though, was they didn't let the UN supervise the destruction of those WMD's so there was no independent proof they were destroyed.

    But I do agree with you on Iran.

    Well actually there was plenty of proof of the destruction, and there was plenty of supervision by UN inspectors until the threat of a US invasion forced the teams to pull out. Left without an excuse, the Bush regime then used intentionally fabricated 'evidence' to justify their invasion plans.

    The idea that Iran -- which has an economy the size of Finland and which has
    not invaded another country since the late 18th century -- is intent on
    provoking WW III is preposterous. That doesn't stop the MSM yet again acting
    as willing dupes for Bush's war policies, dutifully helping to prepare the
    ground for an attack on Iran, just as in Iraq.

    The country which truly has the potential to start WW III is the US, with an
    economy 68 times larger than Iran's, defence spending 110 times greater and
    a long history of intervening in other countries - having invaded or bombed
    over 20 since 1945.

    Canada must help stop this madness.

    My memory is quite different. Hans Blix wanted to tour certain areas, but Saddam put up road blocks so he couldn't. When Mr. Blix did finally get to those areas, he found remnants of some weapons, but not enough 'debris' to account for them all.

    He couldn't verify the weapons had been destroyed.

    It's best if I let Hans speak for himself ...<br />
    <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2004/03/18_blix.shtml">http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2004/03/18_blix.shtml</a><br />
    <br />
    "The important thing to remember, Blix said repeatedly, was that Saddam was cooperating with the inspections, despite the difficulties they create for a leader."<br />
    <br />
    In any event, even if Saddam had not cooperated (which according to Hans was not the case), there is no excuse to the fabrication of evidence to back up the false assertion that Saddam had WMD's, and it's all a moot point since we know that the US government assisted Saddam in acquiring what weapons he did have. The hypocrisy is very ripe, and the obvious war crimes committed by the US slap the face of the UN, since it has shown itself to be powerless before the mighty USA which repeatedly breaks international law with impunity.<br />
    <br />
    Given the US government's history of lying and of committing wars crimes, whatever it has to say about Iran is most likely just another series of lies. The fact is that the US has absolutely no credibility in these matters.<br />

    Yes, that one pretty much sums it all up. Bush should be "put down" immediately like the rabid dog that he is.
