Germany Begins Ban On Polluting Cars In City Centres

Posted on Wednesday, January 02 at 10:20 by N Say
The system is to be extended to about 20 German cities in the course of the year, including Stuttgart and Munich. It applies to all vehicles, including those registered outside Germany, but some officials have indicated that foreign cars will be treated with leniency. In Berlin, city authorities have decided not to punish errant drivers until the end of January. The reform "is the most serious attempt until now to get to grips with the most serious source of air pollution, which causes 75,000 premature deaths per year," said German green group Deutsche Umwelthilfe. http://www.afp.com/english/news/stories/080101221540.xj94c63o.html

I thought fascism died in Germany in 1945! This is ridiculous, plain and simple! If anything, why not just force auto makers to build cars that pollute less? Not everyone can afford a brand new vehicle. Penalize the lower income brackets again, eh?

Germany is a leader in mass transport, and recycling. We'd do well to learn from them.

Do a lot of "lower income brackets" own cars in Germany or here?

Surely not so many, as to be used as an excuse not take the worst of the worst from the roads?

...and since when did we as a society care whether someone had the money to afford 'safer' 'healthier' alternatives.

Hell we don't care if people have houses, but we will sure worry about the poor's efforts to keep their 'polluters' on the road, huh?

The era of 'attrition' must end sometime or people will just do whatever to keep their cars on the road, like they do in Havana 50 years later -- I applaud the Germans for getting pro-active on this score and ignoring 'stakeholder' arguments made by the greedy and wealthy.
