The Ha'aretz article does say Kelman is a Canadian national; so it wasn't technically a fake passport.

Canada is investigating why Uriel Kelman, an Israeli implicated in the New Zealand passport fiasco, used a Canadian passport to enter New Zealand.

According to a report in the New Zealand Herald newspaper, Kelman – who is serving a six-month sentence in New Zealand for trying to obtain local passports for the Mossad – entered New Zealand in 1999 using a Canadian passport rather than an Israeli one.

    This ought to be 'eye on crappy Canadian passports' - there's lots of fakes and stolen ones out there being used by anybody with a few bucks.

    Arg. I goofed. As I pointed out after I submitted it , according to <i>Ha'aretz</i> (which takes great pains to say so in <a href='http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/458465.html'>another article</a>), it wasn't a fake passport. He legitimately holds a Canadian <em>as well as</em> an Israeli passport; the question is whether he used it to do underhanded stuff or work for Israel. <p>I'd passed that along as soon as I'd submitted it, but I guess it got lost.

    CBC Radio is giving this story top billing this morning.

    If you go to Google/news there are several Canadian papers also reporting further on this.

    Evidently the Canadian passport this ex-Israeli "diplomat" is traveling on was stolen from a Canadian while in China.

    Here is a brief excerpt from the Toronto Star report.

    OTTAWA — Federal officials are investigating whether a suspected Israeli spy is travelling in Asia on a stolen Canadian passport.

    Foreign Affairs spokesman Reynald Doiron said agencies are checking allegations that Zev William Barkan — embroiled in a New Zealand espionage caper — is using a Canadian passport issued under the name Kevin William Hunter.

    Diplomatic inquiries, intelligence liaison and police investigation might soon provide answers, Doiron said today. "All of that being put together, we should have a clearer picture."
