Tsunami Bomb Tested In 1940's

Posted on Monday, January 10 at 12:19 by tyrannyresponse
SECRET WARTIME experiments were conducted off the New Zealand coast to perfect a bomb that could trigger devastating tidal waves, according to government files declassified in Auckland. The New Zealand Herald, citing the files, said that senior United States defence officials believed the weapon had the potential to be as deadly as the atomic bomb. But the tsunami bomb, as it was known, was never fully tested and the war ended before the project was completed. old Independent Article: http://www.state.nv.us/nucwaste/news/nn10207.htm Cross-referenced to Taipei Times http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/archives/2000/01/12/0000004078

    Mini tests made a few waves, that's not a Tsunami. A big bomb going off in the ocean would displace water from the centre of the explosion, and then that water would immediately rush back in - it would be a null effect.

    A Tsunami occurs when the entire sea floor is lowered or raised and tens of thousands of tons of water are displaced. And the water has to go somewhere until if finds a new equilibrium, so it washes over everything in its path.

    If someone wanted to go to the tectonic fault lines on the ocean floor, drill holes into them, place nuclear bombs in these holes and set off a whole bunch at the same time - then they might be able to shift things enough to create a Tsunami, or maybe an underwater volcano, or maybe just stir up a bunch of sand and crap - the most likely scenario.

    How do you know what happens when a nuclear explosion takes place under that much water pressure? Why were there no aftershocks? Why did they get the magnitude wrong multiple times?

    ??? there are still aftershocks happening now...

    Well, here's a counterpoint: the technology is over 60 years old. I imagine things have advanced since then.

    Good point about bombs amplifying underwater.

    ?? the article states that the project was never completed because the war ended - so no one was working on advancing the technology.

    Ok fair enough. The US was impressed, however and no new info suggests that they have worked on it further. However, here is some evidence that the Aussies have been working on it.<br />

    The Tsunami bomb did not yield the waves the experimenters had hoped.

    Well, in fact, there has been work on this kind of eco-terrorism. I draw your <br />
    attention to the following quote from Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen <br />
    in 1997:<br />
    ============<br />
    DoD News Briefing <br />
    Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen<br />

    [Cohen's keynote address at the 1997 Conference on Terrorism, Weapons of <br />
    Mass Destruction, and U.S. Strategy at the Georgia Center, Mahler <br />
    Auditorium, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga.]<br />
    <br />
    "Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter <br />
    the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of <br />
    electromagnetic waves. So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that <br />
    are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. <br />
    It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that's <br />
    why this is so important."<br />
    <br />
    ============<br />
    What we dont have is more information on military-grade electromagnetic <br />
    wave technology, a far cry from the cumbersome installation of nuclear <br />
    bombs under enormous pressure at the interstices of the tectonic plates. :-)
