Tory MPs Split With Leader On Gay Marriage; Say They'll Back Liberal Bill

Posted on Friday, February 04 at 12:22 by KevinGagnon

OTTAWA (CP) - Three more Conservative MPs have split with their leader on the issue of gay marriage.

Gerald Keddy, Jim Prentice and James Moore say they will support the Liberal government's bill to legalize same-sex unions. Belinda Stronach long ago declared her support for gay marriage and at least one other Conservative member is still deciding which way to vote.

Party leader Stephen Harper opposes the plan to change the traditional definition of marriage. He proposes instead that gays be entitled to "civil unions." But he is allowing caucus members to vote their conscience.

I really hope this passes smoothly, so the government can move on to more important issues. I think Canadians would be furious if an issue that affected such a small number of Canadians brought down a government, and destabilized the country. I have nothing against this bill passing, but I honestly have little interest in it all. Even gay people I have gone to school with sya they want the government to focus on issues like education, health care, the military and aging infrastructure.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Yep,

This is much ado about nothing. When it is passed and we move on to other issues, it will be forgotten.

Letting gays marry will not affect my marriage or the marriage of any other hetro couple. The world will not end and locusts will not infect the earth. It didn't happen when slavery ended, it didn't happen when women got the vote, it didn't happen with legalized abortion, it won't happen now.

In a year or two, nobody will be able to figure out what the fuss was about.

Unless the silly Conservatives somehow manage to make the bill fail...THEN we will be at this for years to come.

Personally I'd much rather worry about education health care and upgrading the military to the point where we can be effective Peacekeepers and Peace Makers again.

Watch for an article that I submited that relates to this subject. The article I included a video clip of a guy by the name of Craig Chandler (Concerned Christians Canada), who is out to remove Jim Prentice from the New Conservative Party cause of his support for gay marriage. Apparently he is also working quietly to remove Belinda Stronach as well.

I'm starting to think that religion is taking over politics. I think I'm gonna read that book that was on CBC Hot Type called "The Spiral Staircase" by Karen Armstrong. She talks about religion and politics. The book sounds interesting.

I am a Christian that supports the bill and hapen to liive in his riding. I didnt vote for him but I have sent my congratulations for his courage to stand against the facists and I have received a copy his well reasoned decision. this has the potential to divide the conservatives yet again. I think that would make version 7 since MacD.

Craig Chandler ran against Prentice for the leadership of the Conservative party, sorry when they were Alliance, no the old Conservative (I think) anyway, he was always ranting about the return to the family values, right wing religious zeal, then he stepped aside. He does give the impression of an angry man, don't know if he is but, he gave me that impression. This whole issue has become a huge red herring, to keep the little people busy while they're going about the real business, like BMD, etc. Notice the sponsorship scandal hardly makes the news, the LM Census is all but ignored, the threat to our water, selling off our natural resources....all of those and more are not making the news...because somehow it is paramount to the nation that we either allow or disallow people to love who they want to; those other issues, not nearly as sensational! Even in Alberta, where healthcare is a major issue, being threatened like never before, but no we have to stop SSM. Ted Morton wants to stop Alberta from issuing Civil licenses and only allow religious ceremonies, that'll stop it!(and for those who aren't religious or don't belong to a religious group?)Wait just had an idea, they could start the church of Human rights.... How long do you think they can drag this out?

    Bmac,

Glad to see you being a Progressive Conservative, rather then a New Conservative. Now not to get religious in fear of upseting some people. But as a Christian, does things like BMD, and envasion of a country, killing innoncent people, seem like a Christian thing to do ? Your opinion?

I'm trying to understand how the U.S is going so far to the right with the Christians. How does war seems to fit o.k with Christians. Or a BMD defence system seems to fit o.k with Christians. A growing poverty all over the U.S seems to fit o.k with the Christians. So many ungodly things in the U.S, a religious organization supports it.

Scrapping civil marriage would prevent same-sex unions: MLA
CALGARY (CBC) - Alberta should look at only allowing religious marriages in the province, as a way around any federal same-sex marriage legislation, MLA Ted Morton says.
Morton, who represents Foothills-Rocky View, says getting out of the "marriage business" is one of the options the Conservative caucus is exploring to fight gay unions.
Now they're just making their laws discriminatory against Atheists. Well I guess they still can't stop the United Church and other enlightened religious organizations from marrying same-sex couples.

Do you believe Queen Elizabeth II, "Defender of the Faith", will enact legislation that is contrary to the Christian faith?

According to the Christian faith, marriage is honourable in all (Hebrews 13:4) whereas homosexual relationships (Romans 1:26-27) are not honourable.

Also, "he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please wife" and "she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please husband" (1 Corinthians 7:33-34).
