Do Canadians Want Missile Defence?

Posted on Tuesday, February 17 at 16:24 by sthompson
Just as the Chretien and Martin governments have been intentionally dishonest with Canadians about Washington's National Missile Defence plans, some of our Canadian media have been no better, or even much worse.

On February 11th, The National Post headlined a story by their Ottawa bureau chief Robert Fife, "Canadians want missile defence:poll." Immediately below the headline was a sub-head that read "7 out of 10 in favour."

Later in the story, we read that "64% of Canadians favour missile defence."

The survey was conducted by POLLARA which is chaired by long-time Liberal pollster Michael Marzolini.

Canadians reading this story will have no doubt that a strong majority of their fellow citizens believe that Canada should participate in the American program.

One small problem. No such question was asked in the survey, and no such answers were received. The words "National Missile Defence" appeared nowhere in the questions asked. Nor was there any other references of any kind to missile defence.

Yet the headline on the story was "Canadians want missile defence: poll."

It\'s this kind of issue that I believe needs a referendum in Canada. In Switzerland, they have independents and everything is done by referendum. This way at least the majority of citizens are always involved in the policies and have a much better chance of running the government.

We need change big time in the way we elect officials.

This issue was brought up in the House again today, CPAC, once again Pratt said, we are talking with the U.S. to find out what the plan is, then we\'ll decide!! So clearly, they are listening to Canadians, as they maintain, and I wonder how much money we have already pledged or spent in this direction? It really doesn\'t matter what we want,they\'ll tell us what we are getting and how much to pay, it\'s simple!!!

Ya, and the Liberal\'s way of democratic reform is to give our MPs more say. My MP\'s the last person I\'d like to have more say. I WANT MORE SAY!

Reforms are needed, but I dislike referendums. They\'re too prone to fraud. I beleive in a system where people can a good chance of booting out corrupt politicians, but the POLITICIANS should have the powers. It\'s up to us to hold them accountable, not decide everything personally. Sometimes, tough decisions need to be made.

For example, the PCs in Ontario signed a crazy \"Taxpayer protection act,\" banning tax increases unless a majority agrees to one in a referendum. That\'s crazy!

You know I am always amazed at how we say, we must hold our politicians accountable, they say it too, sometimes, usually when they are flinging mud at the other side...but, how can we really? We are suppose to hold them accountable, and then wait till they decide to call an election, then we \'hold them accountable\' by voting them out; good in theory, but really why do we have to wait while they decide if and when to hold an election? That doesn\'t sound like WE are holding anyone accountable, they are holding the cards.

In Alberta, Mr. Klein says that he will allow the public to know about gov spending if he wants us to know; the rules presently say he doesn\'t have to disclose information on where our money goes...why not?

We need new measures to take back our governments, federal and provincial...what is this garbage about the privy council records being sealed for 20 yrs??? I am astounded that any aspect of gov spending, or conduct should be kept secret ever!! It is our government, we the people, we live in a democrazy!!!(spelling intended)
So far we have federal scandals, B.C., N.B., Ontario and now Alberta, provinces with spending problems, and everyone is going to investigate, or inquiry us to death...these are crazy times but I think we are just beginning to realize that all is not peaceful in Canada.

The missile defense is only one contract being sidelined, the census also, and who knows what else is proceeding while we are buffaloed by the media spin on corruption of \'past\' administration!
