Americans, Germans in N.S., Japanese - are all buying recreational properties here in Canada because the Liberals have done nothing to increase Canadian productivity, therefore our dollar is weaker and we can be bought out. Taxes are a huge economic drag in this country because they are spent so foolishly.

If taxes are such a drag, why are foreigners rushing to buy up our businesses?

  4. Sun Jun 06, 2004 4:44 am
exactly! i think they are being bought BECAUSE THEY WERE FOR SALE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Yup. How is it that a poor country like Mexico can have no foreign ownership of land but we can't? Some fools apparently believe there "Isn't enough money." (Not that they fool anybody here.)

Also, Mexico managed to protect even their oil sovereignty, but not us, no maam, we're Canadian.

Yet another "Anything & Everything" being bought up buy Americans - land, heritage landmarks & areas, local & national businesses, industries ...etc, etc, etc. It's gotta stop. How do we do that ??

The bottom line is this: the majority of the politicians in Canada are corrupt, selling us out for a case of Molson`s and a slice of backbacon. They are lining their own pockets, leaving the rest of us to blow in the wind. The NDP keep sending me e-mails full of pdates on the campaign, which is good. But I still think Jack Layton is not saying enough. Let`s talk about NAFTA and the ominous chapter 11 and the energy clause. Let`s talk about Canadian sovereignty. Let`s talk about ratifying the Romanow report, not merely preventing public money from going to private hospitals and MRI`s. Because any form of privatization will kill our public health care system. What is Jack so afraid of?

By organising & getting out & telling people. Tell people about this site, the writings of Mel Hurtig, David Orchard, etc etc. It's not all that hard but it takes time.

It is fine to have some foreign ownership of business in Canada but when do you draw the line. With the Liberals in power there will never be a line drawn.

If the Conservatives win, well I think we all know we can kiss this country goodbye.

Maybe the NDP can stop the bleeding but they aren't going to win.

We need a man like Paul Hellyer leading this country. We need to stop selling everything out.

What the heck does some guy from San Diego care about Rossland? He cares about money. He sees a good mountain, with loads of potential and he wants to cash in.

Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver was bought by Boyne resorst from Michigan a few years ago. Mt. Baldy in Oliver was just bought by an American.

A huge percentage of condos in skia areas in BC are being snapped up by Americans. As well as all the condos being built in Vancouver.

I would like to see some sort of website, a very comprehensive one, that lists all the businesses in Canada that are 100% Canadian owned and operated. I have been thinking of putting one together for some time now.

    Anon,

That would be a helpful website albeit a very tiny one I would suspect?

Howard Katkov and his group of investors has a long history with Red Mountain. Howard cares because he has skied Red for many years. He has been working full-time the last 9 months to put all the pieces in place to make Red a succesful community venture for the investors as well as for the community of Rossland. This particular sale will probably be a good one. Having written that, it is too bad that Canadian citizens don't take the risks of investing in Canada. Why do government regulations allow so much foreign content in Canadian registered retirement savings plans allowing people to in essence invest tax deferred money outside the country instead of in Canada?

Go learn some economics. This has nothing to do with anything you've said here. It has only to do with the lack of political will to protect our interests, mostly due to the fact that the power of our foreign investment review agency (which used to be very stringent until Mulroney got in office) has been gutted to the point that it now exists in name only.
