Posted on Monday, November 22 at 10:33 by Captain Flynn
People who speak French - Sorry, Stephen Harper says, Canada is a not a bilingual country. Policies that ensure the rights of French-speaking Canadians across the country are a mark of "failure."

Atlantic Canada - Canadians of this region have a mental deficiency called "defeatism" according to Stephen Harper.

Women - Harper would allow free votes in Parliament on a woman's reproductive rights, interfering with what should be a matter between a woman and her doctor.

Gay Canadians - According to Stephen Harper, gay Canadians do not deserve the same rights as other people. Stephen Harper would override the Charter to take away their rights.

Native Canadians - The central document of Stephen Harper's relationship to aboriginal Canadians was written by his campaign manager. It calls First Nations savages and says Canada can ignore them and their shameful conditions.

If you vote for Stephen Harper in the next election, these will be your 7 hates.

"Sorry, Stephen Harper says, Canada is a not a bilingual country. Policies that ensure the rights of French-speaking Canadians across the country are a mark of "failure."

No substance whatsoever in this statement IMHO. I would much rather know what makes a country "bilingual" (or not bilingual) and what specific policies ensure these rights. I might agree in fact with many of these policies having failed as some of you well know. I have no problem with Harper challenging the complacency here, assuming this is what he was doing. I am not aware of any other political party actually doing so.

When it comes to Harpers hate of the French, it should be noted as such. Canada was founded by two cultures and two languages. Harper wants to roll that back and ensure his dominate English heritage supplant our known history.

Canadians have a right to demand to be served in both languages - the two languages that formed this great nation.

While I am here - Harpie would probably also like to change our 'Canadian' english to US bastard English.

Anon: do you not think it would make sense to ask the people that are the most likely going to use these services in French outside of Quebec what they actually need? These people are known as Francophones Hors-Quebec (FHQs). Do you know of any English speaking people that access their fed services in French?

The related bureaucracies are self serving, divisive and not looking after the people needs other than their own. As a result, the FHQs are getting dramatically assimilated. Could it be what some evil minds really want??? Understand that the FHQs are ***fully*** bilingual and therefore their needs are not the "reserve" types of needs that we would like to provide them with. It is already hard enough to get functional fed services in English.

I can ensure you that the next generation of FHQs kids are not going to be any more inspired by having more fed services in French, if all it means is that they can work for the feds and live in the "reserve".

Bilingualism IMHO is a wonderful policy but the perfect example of the complacency that happens when people fall into ideologies and rely on their proxies without tracking them: 1) political rot 2) something that accomplishes exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to achieve

It would appear that the author of this piece is the one who harbours the hatred.

    Funny,

I didn't think that VIVE would post clips of politicians totallly out of context, or simply scewing the meaning..
that is of course, unless they are not NDP!!!

    :)

Nice one guys, the more you shoot down Steven, the more people see through your act, and Vive's psuedo news, and fake front as a legitimate forum.

What Harper should really be doing -- if he wants to become a credible candidate -- is look for ways to strengthen bilingualism. He should be looking for ways to engage the West with the East (and Vice-Versa) not trying to increase whatever imaginary lines exist already. There are many French communities in every province in the country. These could be the focus for a genuine effort to make Canada stronger. My biggest beef with the right wing in this country is that they aspire to dismantling what makes Canada great and unique, instead of attempting to improve those traditions. How is it that in the States, the right wing are the super-nationalists, while in Canada the right wing hate our country? Maybe that's going to far, but sometimes it really feels like there is nothing Canadian that they really like. I honestly believe that if the right-wing ever elects a pro-Canadian leader they would have a serious chance of getting elected.

Anon: you are more than welcome to explain what Harper really wants to do with bilingualism, provide the missing context, post articles, get yourself an alias and contribute to forum discussions, etc... I do find Vive actually quite open minded and I find NDP my ***only*** alternative for voting last time. It was also my first time ever voting for them (after wasting my vote many/many other times before).

You're too funny. Harper is open to the idea of uniting language communities across the country as a way of strengthening the federation and you seem to believe he's doing the opposite.

Forgot the 8th. Harper hates Canada in general. I am surprised he has stuck it out in this socialist backwater this long.

I wouldn't go this far in demonising Harper -- he's a lot better than Stockwell Day, the Canadian version of Bush. What bothers me about him, however, is his lack of appreciation for Canadian history and Canadian values. In my conversations with people who lean to the right, I have never gained a sense of what they like about Canada - besides its attachment to the States -- and how they would increase Canadian sovereignty and independance.

You are right Gorian. When have you ever heard someone like Stephen Harper proclaim their love for the country, or even their like? I really think it's true these guys do not like anything about Canada.

I would add a # 8 - Working people. Harpie like all these neoconazi creeps wants us all to be working for minimum wages with 19C working conditions and no unions. Third world universalized if they succeed in getting their way.

Funny how easy it easy to argue about some of these topics, yet his hate for Homosexual Canadians goes undisputed.
