Christmas Wishes From Mel

Posted on Monday, December 08 at 16:38 by sthompson
While there will be someone staying here in my home, I will be away from December 23rd to January 11th and I would be grateful if during that period you did not send me any e-mails. Tom Axworthy recently reviewed Jim Laxer's book The Border in the latest edition of The Literary Review of Canada. Axworthy points out the Laxer anecdote showing that the first prize for the Stratton church building fund raffle for the Lady of Lakes Churches in Stratton, Maine was a 30-06 Remington semi-automatic rifle. Second prize was a 12-gauge Stoeger double-barrel shotgun. Good grief! Today Statistics Canada released a report downplaying concerns re the hollowing out of corporate Canada. Alas, the report failed to concentrate on what has happened to the head offices of Canadian firms taken over by non-residents. So if you read reports that hollowing out is not a major concern, ignore them. They're meaningless. What was rather amusing was the paragraph in today's report showing that "Employment growth was strongest in real estate rental and leasing, professional and technical services and finance and insurance." True, BUT ALL OF THESE SECTORS ARE HEAVILY MAJORITY CANADIAN OWNED AND CONTROLLED. Statistics Canada did this report because of "anecdotal" reports re hollowing out (Eric Reguly, Mel Hurtig, Isiah Litvak, David Crane, Harry Arthurs etc.) BUT, ALL of these reports dealt with the impact of foreign takeovers. I have explained to Statistics Canada that if they wanted to do a meaningful study of the hollowing out process, a study of the impact of foreign takeovers was in order. Mel Hurtig

Eric Reguly, Isiah Litvak, David Crane, Harry Arthurs... I\'ll remember those names.

Orchard has said that he\'s will leave the (neo)Conservative party & that there\'s no place for him if Harper criticises Orchard more than he criticises Paul Martin. I really hope he\'ll meet with Hellyer & Layton & work with them somehow. The Trifecta!

David Orchard and his followers would be welcome to the cause if they can live with Monetary Reform. I know they are against NAFTA and the FTAA, but I would hope they will come over to our side.

I have sent several letters to Mr. Orchard on that basis.

I would hope he responds positively.

If by monetary reform you mean forcing the banks to split the cost of everything 50/50, I think Orchard would be very much in favour of that. He mentioned it here in answering one of Keith Martin\'s (Alliance MP) questions RE shipbuilding industry:

I mean we take some or all the money creation from the wealthy, the banks. Even if in the short term we can make a difference, then going to a 50/50 split with the banks at a later date could work.

They have the institutions in place, and we are so used to writing cheques, using ATM\'s, etc., that the banks can be useful, but NOT the ultimate giver of credit.

We must find a way to keep the wealthy from keeping the poor under their thumb, and taking away a little profit could do just that.

Wait for the screaming, it will happen before you know it.

Did I mention I HATE the idle rich ??

Let\'s have that 50% inheritance tax, that will take the wind out of their sails. (Only if it is dedicated to building up heathcare and education).
