But to his credit, Mr. Harper used the spotlight to speak some truth to power about the U.S. smart-card border-pass plan supposed to take effect next year and which could severely disrupt travel and commerce between the two countries if complying with it isn’t cheap and simple.
"I would just urge the Congress to think carefully," he said."If the fight for security ends up meaning the United States becomes more closed to its friends, then the terrorists have won."
That point needs to made, particularly when Canada has political allies in many U.S. states and in the Senate who agree the border pass should be delayed, and co-ordinated between the two countries, to limit the economic damage.
